Armor (shield), legendary

Ancestral Runic Shield

While holding this shield, you gain a +3 bonus to Armor Class.

You have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and spell attack rolls against you are made with disadvantage.

Bulwark of the First Forge

Forged within the same primordial crucibles as the Ancestral Runic Plate, this shield is not merely its counterpart—it is its equal: the second half of a unified masterpiece of dwarven mastery and divine intent. Legends claim it was shaped beneath the watchful gaze of Moradin himself, embodying the unyielding will of the mountain and the eternal resilience of the dwarven soul.

The Ancestral Runic Shield is a massive, angular bulwark, wrought from an impossible alloy of runic steel, mithral, and adamantine. Its surface is formed of interlocking geometric plates, mirroring the architecture of the armor it was born to accompany.

Across its face, ancient runes are carved in deep channels, glowing faintly like embers beneath stone. These are no mere markings—they are alive, bound with ancestral spirits and the guarded secrets of ages past. They awaken at the presence of danger, their light intensifying as threats draw near.

At its center rests a raised boss shaped like a stylized dwarven visage—stern, immovable, eternal. Its gemstone-set eyes pulse softly in response to hostile intent, as if the shield itself watches the battlefield alongside its bearer.

Runic Deflection

This shield does not merely block—it answers the flow of magic itself.

When targeted by spells or other magical effects, the runes carved across its surface awaken, rippling outward in concentric waves of incandescent light. These living sigils do not absorb physical force, but instead interfere with arcane energies, unraveling and dispersing them before they can fully take hold.

Spellcraft directed against the bearer fractures upon this runic lattice—its power diffused, its precision disrupted—as though the magic itself had struck the unyielding heart of the mountain.

To outside observers, hostile enchantments seem to bend, falter, or collapse entirely upon contact, their energy breaking like a wave against stone.

Runic Bond of the Bulwark

This shield cannot be used unless you are attuned to it and at least one other magic item, either a magic weapon or a magic armor.

While you remain attuned in this way, the shield’s runic matrix anchors itself to your essence, recognizing you as its rightful bearer.

  • While the shield is wielded, it cannot be disarmed, removed, or taken from you against your will by any means short of divine intervention.
  • Any effect that would force you to drop or lose the shield automatically fails, unless you choose otherwise.

If you are no longer attuned to both the shield and a qualifying magic item, the bond immediately weakens, and the shield behaves as a normal magic shield until the condition is restored.

Memory of Stone

The shield remembers.

Every strike it endures is etched into its runic lattice, reinforcing both its structure and the will of its bearer. In moments of dire need, the runes blaze with full brilliance, forming a radiant barrier reminiscent of a rising mountain wall—unyielding, immovable, absolute.

Living Fortress

To bear the Ancestral Runic Shield is to become a fortress made flesh:

unbreakable, immovable, eternal.

Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.

Notes: Advantage: Saving Throws, Bonus: Armor Class, Combat, Warding
