Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement)

“A lesser soul is worn thin by power. This stone teaches the spirit how to bear more.”

Description

The Anchor of the Sixfold Bond is an Artifact pendant of smooth storm-grey stone set within a simple loop of twisted gold, its face marked by a circular sigil of interlocking lines that resemble orbiting rings, sealed gateways, or six hands joined around a hidden center. At first glance it seems almost humble beside gaudier relics, but that restraint is its first deception. The stone is unnaturally balanced in the hand, neither warm nor cold until claimed by a bearer, and its engraved seal catches light with a soft inner glow that never quite matches the color of the room around it.

When worn, the pendant settles against the chest with a curious sense of alignment, as though some unseen weight has clicked into place inside the wearer’s spirit. Attuned creatures often describe the sensation not as empowerment at first, but as expansion: the mind feels more spacious, the will more ordered, and the subtle strain of carrying enchanted objects becomes easier to bear. In the presence of other magic items, the seal brightens in faint pulses, each line responding like a tuning mark recognizing familiar resonance.

The Anchor of the Sixfold Bond was not made to dominate through a single overwhelming power. It was crafted to make a bearer into a living nexus, a stable vessel capable of holding multiple strands of arcane, divine, primal, martial, or planar power without spiritual collapse. Kings would wear it to bind regalia. archmages would covet it for layered implements. champions, collectors, tomb-breakers, and mad visionaries would all see in it the same dangerous promise: more room for power, more room for consequence.

It is an artifact for those who already carry too much and have decided that “too much” is merely the beginning.

Magical Properties and Features

  1. The Sixfold Bond

While wearing and attuned to the Anchor of the Sixfold Bond, your maximum number of attuned magic items increases from 3 to 6.

This is the pendant’s defining miracle. The Anchor reinforces the channels through which a soul bears magical resonance, allowing you to sustain additional attunements without the normal spiritual overload. These additional attunement slots function exactly like normal attunement slots.

If the pendant is removed or your attunement to it ends while you are attuned to more than 3 other items, you immediately choose which items remain attuned. Any attunements beyond your normal limit end at once.

  1. Soul of Ordered Resonance

The Anchor stabilizes the bearer’s spirit against magical interference caused by layered enchantment.

  • Your Intelligence score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24.
  • Your Wisdom score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24.
  • You gain a +3 bonus to Arcana checks.
  • You gain a +3 bonus to saving throws against spells and magical effects.
  • You have advantage on Constitution saving throws made to maintain concentration.

The pendant does not merely let you carry more power. It teaches your body and will how to keep those currents from tearing each other apart.

  1. Nexus Awareness

The Anchor sharpens your perception of magical structure, overlap, and instability.

  • You can cast detect magic at will.
  • You always know whether an item you touch requires attunement, is already attuned to another creature, or is currently suppressed, cursed, dormant, or damaged, though not necessarily the full nature of the curse or damage.
  • You gain advantage on Investigation checks made to analyze magical mechanisms, linked enchantments, overlapping wards, or bound relic systems.
  • You know when you are within 120 feet of an artifact, legendary item, or active magical conduit such as a portal focus, ritual anchor, or enchanted engine, though not its exact location.

To the bearer, powerful magic begins to feel less like mystery and more like architecture.

  1. Shared Burden

The Anchor can absorb part of the strain caused by magical backlash.

When you fail a saving throw against a spell or magical effect, you may use your reaction to halve the damage from that effect or gain advantage on the saving throw reroll, choosing which benefit to use when you activate this feature.

Once you use this property, you cannot use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

If the effect would impose the charmed, frightened, stunned, or paralyzed condition, you may instead choose to become immune to that condition from that effect, but you take 4d8 force damage as the Anchor absorbs the shock into your spiritual lattice.

  1. Reservoir of Concordant Power

The Anchor of the Sixfold Bond holds 12 charges and regains 1d8 + 4 expended charges daily at dawn. While wearing it, you may expend charges to cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

  • Identify (1 charge)
  • Dispel Magic (3 charges)
  • Counterspell (3 charges)
  • Arcane Eye (4 charges)
  • Legend Lore (5 charges)
  • Globe of Invulnerability (6 charges)
  • Telekinesis (5 charges)

Spellcasting Ability: Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma, chosen when you first attune to the pendant.

When one of these spells is cast through the Anchor, the sigil on its face turns with subtle concentric light, like lock-rings opening around an invisible core.

  1. Concord of the Bearer

Once per long rest, you may use an action to awaken the pendant’s supreme function. For 1 minute, you become a living convergence point for enchanted force. While this state lasts:

  • You gain a +2 bonus to AC.
  • You gain resistance to force, psychic, and radiant damage.
  • At the start of each of your turns, choose one magic item you are attuned to. Until the start of your next turn, one numerical bonus granted by that item is increased by 1. This cannot raise a bonus granted by an item above +4.
  • Once on each of your turns, when you cast a spell or hit with a weapon attack using a magic item, you deal an additional 2d8 force damage.
  • Hostile creatures within 20 feet of you have disadvantage on checks or saving throws made to suppress, steal, dispel, or interfere with your magic items or attunements.
  • You may attune to or end attunement with a magic item over the course of 1 minute instead of a short rest for the duration, though this does not let you exceed your maximum of 6 attuned items.

While this power is active, faint ringed sigils orbit you in slow sequence, and the pendant’s seal glows like a patient golden star seen through river-stone.

Drawbacks and Risks

  1. Resonance Strain

The Anchor expands your capacity, but carrying too many potent items remains dangerous. For each item beyond your normal 3 attunement slots, you suffer a cumulative -1 penalty on death saving throws. This penalty disappears as soon as your active attunements drop back down.

Power has room now, but it still has weight.

  1. Spirit-Crowding

If you finish a long rest while attuned to 6 items, you must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or gain one of the following effects until your next long rest, chosen by the DM or rolled randomly:

  • unsettling dreams and fractured sleep
  • disadvantage on your first initiative roll of the day
  • brief sensory overlap from one of your magic items
  • disadvantage on your first concentration check of the day

The Anchor permits multiplicity. It does not promise comfort.

  1. Coveted by the Learned and the Greedy

Any creature capable of identifying the Anchor’s true nature immediately understands its significance. Arcanists, relic-hunters, nobles, artificers, and extraplanar collectors may react to it with awe, envy, or outright predation. Wearing it openly is the metaphysical equivalent of carrying a vault key on a chain.

  1. Refusal of Chaos

If you knowingly attune to a cursed item without taking precautions, or recklessly bind yourself to magic you do not even attempt to understand, the Anchor’s Shared Burden feature becomes unavailable until your next dawn. The pendant was made to order power, not excuse idiocy.

Lore and History

Legends disagree on who first made the Anchor of the Sixfold Bond, but all surviving accounts agree it emerged in an age when the greatest wielders of magic had outgrown the ordinary limits of attunement. Some say it was forged by an artificer-philosopher who believed the soul could be taught to hold enchantment the way a cathedral holds bells. Others claim it was a divine answer to a mortal problem, given to a champion burdened with too many sacred relics to save a realm in collapse. There are darker theories too: that it was assembled from the remnants of six shattered items whose powers would not die, only learn to coexist.

Whatever its origin, the Anchor has always changed the scale of what one bearer can become. It does not grant mastery of every item it enables, but it makes possible combinations of power that would otherwise remain fantasy or catastrophe. In Aetheris, an artifact like this would sit at the center of royal treasuries, planar expeditions, legendary vaults, and wars fought by people clever enough to fear logistics as much as swords.

It is not the loudest relic in the room. It is the one that lets the room contain six louder ones.

Additional Roleplay Features

  1. Harmonic Pulse

When near other attuned magic items, the symbol on the pendant may brighten in separate rings, as though counting silent agreements.

  1. Echoes of Other Relics

Bearers sometimes dream in fragments drawn from their other attuned items: a forge, a battlefield, a temple bell, a drowning corridor, a dragon’s breath, a locked gate.

  1. Measured Calm

Even in the presence of chaotic magic, the pendant encourages a strange inner order. Many attuned wearers unconsciously begin arranging objects, thoughts, and plans into sets of three or six.

Summary of Item

The Anchor of the Sixfold Bond is an Artifact pendant that expands the wearer’s attunement capacity from 3 items to 6, making it one of the most coveted relics imaginable for powerful adventurers and arcane elites. In addition to this defining property, it increases Intelligence and Wisdom, strengthens Arcana, improves magical defenses and concentration, heightens awareness of enchanted objects and artifact-level power, and stores a reserve of identification, dispelling, warding, and telekinetic magic. Its greatest function transforms the wearer into a living nexus of ordered enchantment, strengthening their attuned items and protecting the web of powers bound to their soul.

“One relic makes a hero. Three make a legend. Six make a problem history will need new shelves to describe.”
