Armor (shield), very rare (requires attunement)

"Faith is not always gentle. Sometimes it is a wall of green steel, gold wings, and a promise that refuses to kneel."

Description

The Aegis of Unbroken Conviction is a Very Rare magical shield crafted in the form of a long kite shield, its deep green face bordered by burnished gold and crowned with a raised crest of sacred metalwork. Across its front stretch two golden wings, each feather etched with minute prayers, victory marks, and names of those who survived impossible sieges beneath its protection. At the shield’s center rests a circular emblem of mirrored wings and a sword-like sigil, suggesting divine guardianship, militant faith, and disciplined resolve.

The shield’s surface bears scratches, dents, and scars, yet none weaken its structure. Instead, each mark seems sanctified by endurance. When light touches the gold trim, the shield glows with a soft dawnlike sheen. When darkness gathers, the central sigil gleams like a watchful eye behind a chapel door. It is both battlefield relic and holy standard, designed to be seen, followed, and trusted when courage starts to fray.

The Aegis is most often associated with paladins, clerics, temple-knights, radiant crusaders, and oathbound guardians who defend the innocent against fiends, undead, tyrants, and oathbreakers. It does not demand quiet piety. It favors action, sacrifice, discipline, and the willingness to become the last locked gate between evil and the helpless.

In battle, the shield feels lighter than its size suggests. Its wings subtly shift beneath the hand, adjusting the bearer’s stance, guiding blocks, and turning aside blades with almost ceremonial precision. When the bearer protects another creature, the shield hums with a low golden resonance, as though somewhere far away a war bell has answered.

Magical Properties and Features

  1. Sanctified Bulwark

While holding the Aegis of Unbroken Conviction, you gain a +2 bonus to AC in addition to the shield’s normal bonus. This makes it a +2 magical shield.

In addition, you gain Resistance to Radiant damage and Necrotic damage while attuned to the shield.

When an undead or fiend hits you with a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to cause the shield’s wings to flare with golden light. The attacker takes 2d8 Radiant damage, and you gain temporary hit points equal to your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma or Wisdom modifier, your choice when you attune to the shield.

You can use this reaction a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

  1. Wings of Intercession

When a creature you can see within 15 feet of you is hit by an attack, you can use your Reaction to call forth spectral golden wings from the shield. The wings sweep between the attacker and the target, reducing the damage by:

2d10 + your Proficiency Bonus

If this reduces the damage to 0, the protected creature may immediately move up to 10 feet without provoking Opportunity Attacks.

If the attack was made by an undead, fiend, or creature currently affected by a curse, the damage reduction increases to:

3d10 + your Proficiency Bonus

  1. Edict of the Golden Wing

As a Bonus Action, you can raise the shield and issue a command of courage. Choose up to six friendly creatures within 30 feet of you. For 1 minute, chosen creatures gain the following benefits:

  • Advantage on saving throws against being Frightened or Charmed
  • A +1 bonus to AC while they remain within 10 feet of you
  • When a chosen creature starts its turn with 0 hit points, it has advantage on its next Death Saving Throw

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

  1. Rebuke the Profane

As an Action, you can brandish the Aegis and release a wave of consecrated force in a 15-foot cone. Each hostile creature in the cone must make a Wisdom saving throw.

Save DC: 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Charisma or Wisdom modifier, your choice when you attune to the shield.

On a failed save, a creature takes 4d8 Radiant damage and is Pushed 10 feet away from you. Undead and fiends that fail this save are also Frightened of you until the end of your next turn.

On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and is not pushed or frightened.

You can use this feature 3 times, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

Armor Bonuses

Attribute Bonus: While attuned to the Aegis of Unbroken Conviction, your Charisma or Wisdom score increases by 1, to a maximum of 20. You choose the ability when you attune to the shield.

Armor Bonus: The shield grants a +2 magical bonus to AC, in addition to the normal shield bonus.

Skill Bonus: You gain a +2 bonus to Wisdom (Insight), Charisma (Persuasion), and Charisma (Intimidation) checks. This bonus increases to +4 when dealing with frightened civilians, sworn soldiers, temple authorities, oathbound orders, undead hunters, or creatures being coerced by supernatural evil.

Proficiency Bonus: If you are not proficient with shields, you gain proficiency with this shield while attuned to it. If you are already proficient with shields, you have advantage on ability checks made to hold a defensive formation, protect a doorway, maintain a shield wall, or physically prevent a hostile creature from reaching an ally.

Drawbacks and Risks

  1. The Weight of Witness

The Aegis remembers cowardice in moments of sacred duty. If you willingly abandon an innocent creature, sworn ally, or helpless captive to death or torment when you had a reasonable chance to intervene, the shield becomes spiritually heavy.

Until you finish a Long Rest and take meaningful action toward restitution, you lose access to Wings of Intercession and Edict of the Golden Wing.

  1. Beacon of Belief

The shield’s magic is difficult to conceal. While you are attuned to it, you have disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide from undead, fiends, celestials, or creatures with truesight. Such beings instinctively sense the shield’s consecrated presence within 60 feet, though they do not automatically know your exact location.

  1. No Shelter for False Oaths

If you knowingly break a solemn oath sworn while bearing the shield, you must succeed on a DC 15 Charisma saving throw at the end of your next Long Rest. On a failure, you cannot regain the use of Rebuke the Profane until you confess the broken oath, seek absolution, or fulfill a corrective deed determined by the DM.

Lore and History

The Aegis of Unbroken Conviction is believed to have been commissioned by a militant temple order after a disastrous siege in which a city’s defenders faltered before undead invaders. Its maker, the goldsmith-priest Maeron Halvyr, refused to craft a shield merely for survival. Instead, he made a shield that would shame despair itself. Each feather on the golden wings was engraved with the name of a defender, healer, mourner, or child saved during the city’s final stand. Since then, the Aegis has passed between champions in times of crisis, appearing wherever faith must become more than prayer: a barricade, a blade turned aside, a hand pulling the dying back from the ash and thunder.

Additional Roleplay Features

  1. The Feathers Remember

When the bearer saves a creature from death, one of the golden feathers briefly glows. If the saved creature later speaks a sincere blessing or thanks over the shield, a tiny mark appears along the feather’s edge, visible only in sunlight or under divine magic.

  1. Bell-Hum Warning

The shield emits a faint bell-like vibration when undead, fiends, desecrated ground, or oathbreaking magic is nearby. This does not reveal exact numbers or locations, but it gives the bearer a subtle warning that something profane is close.

  1. Standard of the Fearless

Soldiers, pilgrims, temple guards, and common folk may recognize the shield as a relic of protection. In settlements threatened by supernatural evil, the bearer may be asked to stand at gates, bless defenses, lead evacuations, or judge whether a place can still be saved.
