Weapon (crossbow, heavy), rare

A rune cannon is a rune-bound Martial Ranged weapon created through the Gun Mage's Rune Cannon Armament feature. When created, its wielder chooses its appearance. It might resemble a pistol, hand crossbow, compact arbalest, or another setting-appropriate weapon that would ordinarily require loading. This appearance has no effect on its game statistics.

The rune cannon deals 1d10 Force damage and has a normal range of 60 feet and a long range of 120 feet. It has the Ammunition property, can be wielded in one hand, and doesn't have the Light, Loading, or Two-Handed property. Its repeating feed allows its wielder to fire it without a free hand, but the wielder must still supply appropriate ammunition.

While wielding the rune cannon, a Gun Mage can use it as a Spellcasting Focus for Artificer spells. The Gun Mage's Rune Cannon Armament feature, rather than the weapon itself, allows Intelligence to replace Dexterity for its attack and damage rolls and permits Rune Shots to be channeled through it.

A rune cannon is a weapon and a Spellcasting Focus, and nothing more. It isn't a magic item, doesn't require attunement, doesn't expend a use of Replicate Magic Item, and doesn't require or count as a Magic Item Plan. It can't be created, replaced, or enhanced by a Magic Item Plan, including Weapon +1. It grants no bonus to attack or damage rolls and has no independent scaling or magical properties. Any Rune Shot effect comes from the Gun Mage subclass, not from the rune cannon.

D&D Beyond Compatibility: This homebrew item uses the Heavy Crossbow as its equipment template. Its intended range is 60/120 feet, regardless of the range displayed by D&D Beyond. Ignore any inherited weapon properties or mastery effects that conflict with Rune Cannon Armament. The subclass rules define the weapon's actual statistics.

Proficiency with a Heavy Crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Push. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can push the creature up to 10 feet straight away from yourself if it is Large or smaller.

Notes: Ignore Weapon Property: Two-Handed, Bonus: Magic Item Attack With Intelligence, Ignore Weapon Property: Loading, Replace Damage Type: Force, Ignore Weapon Property: Heavy, Ammunition, Heavy, Loading, Range, Two-Handed, Push
