Earpiece of Hearing STS-1000 (Magic/ Tech)
If the user sticks it in his ear and presses the silver disk (illuminating the blue ring), all sounds around the wearer are amplified. It requires the user’s concentration to pick out and pay attention to a voice among all the amplified noises, but in doing so, the wearer can hear whispered conversations out to 60 feet and normal volume speech to 120 feet with reasonable clarity.
The device can only operate for one minute at a time, however, before it gets hot to the touch and shuts down. Schledvak’s inventions are not known for reliability. It can operate again after one hour of rest.
History & Description
Built by the artificer priest Schledvak the Slow, who is known for his inventions to help people with various disabilities, this device appears as a silver chain with a pendant. The pendant is of a semi-hard tan material and some shiny silver-ish metal. There is a crack in the tan material. The pendant is in roughly the shape of a conch shell but with a smooth exterior. There is one larger hole on the tapered end and multiple smaller holes on the larger end. Inside the holes there appears to be some black membranous material. There is a small silver disk on one side, and if pressed, a blue ring glows around the silver disk.

DM’s note: This particular unit is damaged (the crack in the tan material) and only about 70% of speech is understandable, with the remaining 30% being overpowered by static. The DM will relay overheard conversations with an appropriate level of static and missing words. Only an artificer using the mending spell can fix the device, as the lay person or normal arcane caster would not understand the mechanical workings of the device in enough to know how or what parts to mend.
Notes: Figuring out the operation and best use of the device requires an average Int and Wis of 12, and at least 1d6 hours plus a DC of 15 (one attempt per short or long rest) to gain attunement
