Description
The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device, commonly called the Portal Gun, is a one-of-a-kind tool capable of creating two linked portals that form a temporary passage through space.
The device creates one blue portal and one orange portal by default. Once both portals are placed on suitable surfaces, they form a seamless gateway between the two locations.
The device is worn over one arm-like extremity roughly equivalent in size to an average humanoid arm. Once attuned, the wielder can remove the device at any time.
If a feature of the Portal Gun requires a saving throw, the save DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier.
Passive Features
Arm-Mounted Frame
While attuned to the Portal Gun and wearing it, you gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
Experimental Plasma Accelerator
The Portal Gun runs on an experimental plasma accelerator whose output fluctuates after each full recharge.
When you finish a long rest, roll 1d10. The number rolled determines how many times you can establish a functioning Gateway before you finish your next long rest.
Only forming a functioning Gateway expends one use. Firing a single portal does not expend a use unless a second portal successfully stabilizes and links to it.
You cannot fire both portals at the same time. Each portal must be fired separately.
If you have no uses remaining, the Portal Gun can still fire unstable portal matter, but it cannot establish a functioning Gateway.
Artisanal Gateway
Once per long rest, you can change the color of the portals created by the Portal Gun. This change is cosmetic and does not alter the function of the portals.
Active Features
Wormhole
As an action, you fire one portal at a fairly flat surface you can see within 100 feet. The surface can be stationary or moving, provided it is flat enough for the portal to stabilize.
If the portal strikes a jagged, unstable, heavily uneven, or otherwise unsuitable surface, it dissolves into plasma particles before creating a passage.
When the first portal sticks to a surface, it displays the dimensions chosen by the wielder but does not become active until the second portal sticks to a different surface not already occupied by the first portal.
Once both portals are successfully placed, they form a Gateway. Establishing a functioning Gateway expends one use from the Experimental Plasma Accelerator.
Portals cannot be damaged directly. However, if the surface around a portal is damaged, bent, broken, warped, or otherwise altered in a way that compromises its flatness or structural integrity, the portal immediately closes.
Gateway
A Gateway is a temporary fold in space that allows creatures, objects, and physical matter to pass between the two linked portals without resistance.
The distance between the two portals does not matter. As long as both portals exist, anything that enters one portal exits through the other.
A Gateway lasts for up to 1 minute, provided the Portal Gun remains intact and both portals remain stabilized on suitable surfaces. The portals close automatically when the duration ends, even if they never formed a functioning Gateway.
You can deactivate the portals at any time without using an action.
If the portals close while a creature or object is partially between them, that creature or object is harmlessly pushed 5 feet away from the nearest portal.
Adaptive Sizing
As a bonus action, you can adjust the size of the next portal fired from the Portal Gun using the control panel beneath your fingers.
A portal can be as small as a 6-inch-radius circle (15 cm) and as large as 6 1/2 feet long and 3 feet wide (2 meters long and 1 meter wide). The maximum size is the Portal Gun’s default portal size.
Both portals must be the same size to form a functioning Gateway.
Anti-Gravity Claw (2/Day)
The Portal Gun has three protruding metal arms surrounding its portal aperture. These arms allow the device to create a zero-point energy field, a localized field of suspended force that temporarily negates the effective weight of a held object.
As an action, you target one nonliving object within 5 feet of you that weighs no more than 440 lb. (200 kg) and occupies a space no larger than 176 cubic feet (5 cubic meters). The object becomes suspended by the Anti-Gravity Claw for up to 5 minutes.
While the object is suspended, you can carry and move it as though it were weightless.
You can end this effect at any time without using an action, causing the object to drop.
Due to safety restrictions built into the Portal Gun’s hardware, the Anti-Gravity Claw cannot be used on living creatures in the traditional sense, or on objects currently in direct contact with a living creature.
Once both uses are expended, the Anti-Gravity Claw requires 8 hours to fully recharge.
Black Hole (Once Ever)
You remove the upper plating of the Portal Gun and press the emergency experimental plasma-accelerator removal button.
Instead of removing the experimental plasma accelerator, the device enters meltdown and fires an unstable purple singularity at a surface within 30 feet.
When expelled, the singularity sticks to the first suitable surface it contacts and begins increasing its mass at an unfathomable speed by manipulating the gravitational force around it.
The singularity grows violently until the start of your next turn.
Each creature within 60 feet of the singularity must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature is pulled into the singularity’s center. On a successful save, the creature is not pulled.
At the start of your next turn, the singularity detonates in a 90-foot-radius explosion.
Each creature pulled into the singularity’s center takes 10d6 force damage, is thrown 30 feet away from the center in a random direction, and lands prone.
The explosion leaves behind a massive, roughly spherical crater with a 90-foot radius, deep enough to reshape the battlefield around the point of detonation.
After this feature is used, the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device becomes completely unusable and cannot be repaired by normal means.
