An artifact created on the Plane of Elemental Air by the Wind Dukes, the reassembly of this rod is an innate desire of the Aarakocra, but a worthy challenge for any adventurer. This artifact has also been called the Rod of Law and was broken into seven, 8in pieces during a battle that occurred long ago, scattering the pieces across the Planes. Each part has an innate spell; each time two consecutive pieces are connected the rod receives more power from the plane of Elemental Air, adding both strength and another spell to its repertoire.
Each spell can be cast by expending charges equal to the level the spell is cast at whether that be its base level or a higher level; charges are regenerated at the number of rod pieces attached rounded to the next highest die e.g. two connected pieces roll 1d4. Each piece has charges, when the pieces connect add the charges of each piece together to get the total e.g. Part 1 connected to Part 2 has four charges.
Part 1: Cure Wounds ; 2 Charges
Part 2: Zone of Truth ; 2 Charges
Part 3: Haste ; 2 Charges
Part 4: Greater Restoration ; 3 Charges
Part 5: True Seeing ; 3 Charges
Part 6: Heal ; 3 Charges
Part 7: ShapeChange ; 5 Charges
Connections:
1&2: Gust of Wind ; Learn Auran as a language
2&3: Dust Devil
3&4: Fly
4&5: Wind Walk ; +1 Quarterstaff, extra 1d6 force damage
5&6: Investiture of Wind ; +2 Quarterstaff, extra 1d8 force damage
6&7: Control Weather ; +3 Quarterstaff, extra 1d10 damage
Upon completion, the rod can also cast True Resurrection, but there is an 80% chance the rod will break and scatter across the Planes.
Notes: Each part of the staff must be attuned to and assembled over a short rest; the separate part can be attached to the rest of the rod by the attunee with a successful DC 10 Constitution check or the piece will teleport 1d100 miles away; upon successful connection of the piece, the atunee will be able to sense the location of the next piece of the rod. If the rod is unattuned, after 24 hours the rod shatters again and the pieces are teleported randomly across the Planes., Lawful Good, Neutral Good, or Lawful Neutral Character
Would anyone like me to break this down into rod parts? i.e. Rod Part 1, Rod Part 1-2, Rod Part 1-3, etc.?
Yes please. I'd like to hide the full item from my PCs
How many charges does the rod get of the connection spells after pieces are connected?
Oh I think you meant to follow the original Rod of Seven parts design and make the "Connections" powers unlimited except that each time one is used there is a 1 in 20 chance that the rod breaks apart into pieces and teleports to random areas up to 1200 miles away (or even to another plane altogether I believe)
Might want to update the description.
You might also want to add the part from the original rules that "If 'out of order' pieces touch each other (the 1st part touching the 3rd, for example), the higher numbered piece teleports away to a random location up to 1,000 miles away (or even to another plane I believe).
Then the fun part is that the individual Rod pieces should be individual items and should not have their numbering stated anywhere in their description so I can give those to the players and watch them anxiously try to figure out what the correct order is (Evil DM laughter).
