Thin brass spectacles stored inside a hardened leather case lined with faded ledger paper. Tiny arcane runes spiral around the rim of the lenses, shifting subtly whenever magic is observed nearby. The lenses were originally designed by famed Artificer Shivelle Nimblehands for her brother Cal to make his studying easier while away at college. Shameless plug for dummies_and_dicerolls on Twitch and YT.
Observed Transcription:
While wearing the lenses, you may spend at least 1 uninterrupted minute carefully observing a creature casting a spell or a willing creature explaining the structure and execution of a spell to you. At the end of the observation, you may attempt to transcribe the spell into your spellbook even if you do not possess a scroll or formal written copy.
The spell must be of a level you can prepare, belong to the wizard spell list, and have been fully cast or explained during the observation. Transcribing the spell follows all normal wizard rules and costs the normal amount of gold in supplies, but requires twice the normal amount of time as you reconstruct the spell from memory, notations, and inferred magical structure. When the spell is officially copied into the spellbook, the page of that spell will often contain shorthand ruins only legible to the author, fragmented observations from the original caster written as footnotes and/or marginal annotations interpreting how the spell was "understood" rather than formally taught.
Clause Review:
The lenses hold 3 charges and regains all expended charges at dawn. While wearing them, you may expend 1 charge to cast one of the following spells without expending a spell slot:
- Identify
- Detect Magic
When cast this way, the spell manifests as faint floating annotations and spectral footnotes surrounding the target.
Fine Print:
Whenever you fail an Arcana check related to understanding a spell or magical effect, you may reroll the check. Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until next dawn.
"I want you to do less sittin' and more doin'. Get 'atter bud!"
