A cracked porcelain mask hangs from a chain of tarnished silver bells. One half of the mask bears an exaggerated grin, while the other twists into a silent scream. The bells softly jingle even when no wind blows, and faint laughter can sometimes be heard from inside the amulet itself.
Those who wear the amulet often find themselves smiling at inappropriate moments — during funerals, battles, or while speaking of terrible things.
Properties of the Amulet
Carnival’s Delight
While attuned to the amulet, you gain proficiency in either Performance, and Deception. If already proficient, your proficiency bonus is doubled for checks made with the chosen skill.
In addition, you may cast the following spells without material components:
- Tasha’s Hideous Laughter — at will
- Mirror Image — 3/day
Reveler’s Boon
Whenever a creature within 60 feet fails a saving throw against being charmed, frightened, or magically compelled to laugh, you gain one Mirth Charge (maximum 5).
As a bonus action, you may expend charges to produce one of the following effects:
| Charges | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 | Teleport up to 30 feet in a burst of confetti and laughter. |
| 2 | Force a creature you can see within 60 feet to make a Wisdom save or erupt into uncontrollable laughter until the end of its next turn. |
| 3 | Create illusory duplicates of yourself. Until the start of your next turn, attacks against you have disadvantage. |
| 5 | Twist reality briefly. Roll a d6: on odd numbers, a beneficial magical effect occurs; on even numbers, a catastrophic or absurd effect chosen by the DM occurs. |
The Laughing Reflection
The alternate self is not evil — merely wrong.
This version of the wearer comes from a reality touched by Larquin’s madness, where pain and comedy are indistinguishable. The Reflection possesses all the wearer’s memories and abilities, but its personality is distorted in unsettling ways:
- It laughs during serious conversations.
- It treats violence as theatrical entertainment.
- It becomes fascinated by emotional suffering.
- It speaks in riddles, jokes, and mockery.
- It may “help” allies in deeply destructive ways.
The Reflection is controlled by the DM.
While transformed:
- The wearer’s alignment shifts one step toward Chaotic.
- They gain advantage on Charisma checks.
- They have disadvantage on Wisdom saving throws.
- Whenever initiative is rolled, the wearer must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom save or spend their first turn performing some bizarre or theatrical act before acting normally.
