This charm is made from a broken piece of the Lab chapel altar, wrapped in dark thread and hung from a short cord. Its surface is cracked with old ritual lines, and when held too tightly, it feels less like stone and more like a tooth clenched in the palm.
The charm has 1 charge. It regains its expended charge when the attuned wearer finishes a long rest.
Splintered Protection. When you make a saving throw, you can expend 1 charge to add 1d4 to the roll. You can use this feature after rolling the d20 but before the DM says whether the saving throw succeeds or fails.
Whispered Command. If the saving throw still fails after adding the d4, the charm cracks slightly and whispers a command into your mind. Roll a d4 on the Altar Command table. On your next turn, you must follow the result as if affected by a failed command spell. This effect does not require concentration and does not allow an additional saving throw.
If you are unable to take your next turn, the command waits until the next turn on which you can act.
| d4 | Command | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Drop | You drop whatever you are holding and then end your turn. |
| 2 | Flee | You spend your turn moving away from the source of the failed saving throw, or from the nearest obvious threat if the source is unclear. |
| 3 | Grovel | You fall prone and then end your turn. |
| 4 | Halt | You do not move and take no actions. A flying creature stays aloft, provided that it can do so. If it must move to stay aloft, it flies the minimum distance needed to remain in the air. |
The charm cannot force you to directly harm yourself, but it can force hesitation, surrender, fear, or obedience at the worst possible moment.
Notes: To attune to the charm, the bearer must make 3 saving throws against fear, charm, compulsion, necrotic magic, undead magic, or reliquary magic while carrying it. This must happen during meaningful danger, combat, ritual exposure, or exploration. Practicing harmless saving throws in a safe place does not count unless the DM allows it., Utility, Warding
