Wondrous Item, legendary (requires attunement)
This heavy Amulet features a perfectly preserved, petrified heart suspended inside a glass vial. When donned, the wearer's pulse slows down until it eventually stops, and biological processes freeze in a state of suspended animation.
  • Stilled Biology: While wearing this amulet, you gain immunity to poison damage and the poisoned condition. You are also immune to the effects of all diseases, though your body can still host and carry them, potentially exposing others to infection. You no longer need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep. To gain the benefits of a long rest, you must still spend 4 hours engaged in light activity (such as reading or keeping watch) rather than sleeping.
  • Agelessness: Your physical body stops aging entirely. You are immune to both natural and magical aging effects (such as the horrific aging touch of a Ghost).

As an action, a living creature can place this amulet upon the remains of a dead humanoid and speak its command word. Doing so forces the amulet to instantly and automatically attune to the deceased remains. The lingering necromantic shockwaves force the creature's soul back into its body, causing them to immediately regain consciousness and physical functionality. Once remains reanimated by this effect are reduced to 0 hit points, they rapidly decay into a black sludge and can no longer benefit from this effect.

For the duration of this forced attunement, the host's creature type temporarily becomes UndeadFor any remains successfully reanimated using this effect, the magic effectively halts further degradation of the spirit's connection to the physical plane. This effect extends the time limit on raising the target from the dead; days spent under the influence of this amulet do not count against the time limits of resurrection spells such as Raise Dead or ResurrectionThe capabilities of a creature revived by this effect are strictly dictated by the state of physical degradation of their remains at the time of exposure to the amulet:

  • Fresh / Intact: Retains all class features, memories, personality, and physical capabilities. When they revive, they do so with half the maximum health they had when alive, and cannot recover health beyond this maximum while animated by the amulet.
  • Moderately Decayed: Suffers permanent disadvantage on all Dexterity and Charisma-based checks due to stiffening, sloughing flesh. They lose access to any features requiring complex vocal components or fine motor control. When they revive, they do so with half the maximum health they had when alive, and cannot recover health beyond this maximum while animated by the amulet. Revived creatures in this state suffer a -8 to their Constitution score. If this reduction brings the target's Constitution score or their health after revival to 0, rather than revive, the excessive necrotic energy causes the body to explode with necromantic energy. All creatures within 10 feet must take 4d4 Necrotic damage and 2d12 Bludgeoning damage, and the remains are completely destroyed as a result.
  • Skeletal / Severely Ruined: Remains in this state are too degraded to be revived, as there is no tissue remaining that can sustain the amulet's facsimile of life.

Curse (Deadly Inheritance): This amulet is cursed, a fact revealed only when an Identify spell is cast on it or it is attuned. If the amulet is removed from your body by any means other than a Remove Curse spell while you are alive, you instantly drop dead, as your stilled vital functions simply fail to start again. If stolen from you while you are alive, you suffer this fatal effect, and the thief instantly and automatically becomes attuned to the amulet. If you die of natural or external causes, the curse goes dormant, allowing your remains to be safely looted without killing the looter or forcing attunement. If the amulet is attuned to previously deceased remains that have been revived using the above effect, removing the amulet in any way causes the remains to rapidly decay into a black sludge, unable to be revived using this effect. Stealing the amulet from remains still triggers the Deadly Inheritance curse.

Ending Attunement: If a Remove Curse spell or similar magic is successfully cast upon the attuned user or the amulet, then attunement ends and the amulet detaches. Any remains that were attuned to the amulet immediately collapse back into their prior inert, deceased state. Reanimated remains that have become inert due attunement ending rapidly decay into a black sludge, which this item cannot attune to.
