The Ashes of Kempiress are all that remains of the magic user whose name the item bears. The ashes are contained within a crystal not bigger than a chestnut, mostly translucent with some minor occlusions. It is bound to leather straps that continue in their weave to form a necklace. If you look closer and through the light, you will be able to see that the center is hollow and that there is a powdery material inside. Upon closer inspection (DC 18 Investigation/Nature/Arcana), the crystal will be revealed to be simple quartz.
Kempiress was a magic user of some import and ingenuity who always worked on the fringes of magical innovation. He is the one who found the stone and studied its potential. He was the one that realized that it could be used to transport the wearers in moments of great distress to a safer place. Kempiress was destroyed when he attempted to imbue the crystal with this magical potential and his own ashy remains drawn into the void of the crystal. Sadly, he succeeded in his own failure, and in his death, the magic crystal gained the power that he wished to place within it.
As a ritual outside of combat, or as a reaction within combat, the wearer can cast teleport to a predetermined locale. If the wearer has not determined the locale, or, if they are already within the chosen location, they may choose a location within 1 mile of the casting to appear. When the crystal is used in this way, the wearer appears to disintegrate into a blast of gray ashes doing 2D6 damage to anyone within 30 feet.
This effect can only be used once per day.
If a user has not attuned to the crystal, Kempiress may still choose to allow the user to use this power when the user has reached 0 HP or below. When the wearer hits 0 HP or below (even if the damage is well below the threshold for the character to normally die instantly), the wearer will appear before the shadow of Kempiress. If Kempiress believes them to be a worthy wearer (which is usually someone who brings good into the world, creates or has a fascination with magic, or believes in Law or balance), they will receive the effect of the device, which is to explode into a cloud of gray ash and appear elsewhere (within one mile) with 1 HP. If the wearer is considered unworthy (evil or of a chaotic alignment), then they must make a Charisma check of 25 in order to persuade Kempiress to use the power. If the user succeeds in either way, they are considered attuned to the item.
Once a week, as a ritual, the attuned user can commune with the shadow of Kempiress. You may ask him one question and use his Intelligence and Wisdom scores to answer that question. The shadow of Kempiress has an Intelligence of 22 (+6), and a Wisdom of 19 (+4).
If the crystal is ever broken, Kempiress will return to his mortal form. The crystal has 300 HP that instantly regenerate after being damaged. If a wearer purposefully attempts to break the crystal, they will lose their attunement.
Notes: : During a long rest, the wearer must succeed on a charisma check of 25. If the wearer fails, they may not regain hit points, and cannot attempt it again until another long rest.
