“One swallow, and the body remembers how to endure what the soul already survived.”
Description
The Aetherglass Vitalis Draught is a Very Rare potion contained within a heavy faceted vial of blue-green crystal, capped with brass and rune-tightened steel. The liquid inside does not pour like ordinary fluid. It rolls slowly, almost thoughtfully, as though filled with glacial light, seafoam, and compressed breath. When shaken, faint cloudy shapes drift within it like distant storms seen beneath ice.
This potion was designed for warriors, explorers, monster hunters, duelists, plague survivors, and adventurers whose lives demand impossible stamina. Upon opening the bottle, the imbiber smells rain on stone, bitter herbs, cold metal, and the sharp electric sting of raw vitality. The first sip is painfully cold. The second burns. By the final swallow, the imbiber’s veins shine faintly beneath the skin for several heartbeats before the magic settles into bone, muscle, blood, and breath.
Unlike potions that provide temporary vigor, the Aetherglass Vitalis Draught permanently alters the body’s internal rhythm. It strengthens organs, thickens resilience, and teaches the flesh to recover more efficiently from shock, poison, fatigue, and blood loss. The transformation is not loud or dramatic. There is no eruption of power, no thunderclap, no divine choir. Instead, the imbiber simply notices that exhaustion comes later, wounds close cleaner, cold bites less deeply, and the heart no longer panics so quickly when death leans close.
Yet the potion is not entirely gentle. Its magic reinforces the body through controlled internal stress, leaving subtle side effects. Some imbibers develop a faint crystalline sheen in their eyes. Others find their pulse slows unnervingly during rest. A few report that their blood feels “heavier,” as though each drop has learned stubbornness.
Magical Properties and Features
- Permanent Vital Fortification
After drinking the Aetherglass Vitalis Draught, your Constitution score permanently increases by +2, to a maximum of 24.
This benefit is permanent and nonmagical once fully integrated into the body. It cannot be dispelled, though effects such as Wish, divine intervention, or extreme transmutation magic may alter it at the DM’s discretion.
A creature can benefit from only one Aetherglass Vitalis Draught in its lifetime. Drinking a second draught provides no additional Constitution increase and may trigger the drawback Overcharged Humors.
- Breath of the Deep Vessel
Your lungs and blood become more efficient at storing and circulating air.
After drinking the potion:
- You can hold your breath twice as long as normal.
- You gain advantage on Constitution saving throws against suffocation, drowning, choking vapors, smoke inhalation, and thin-air exposure.
- You have advantage on ability checks made to endure forced marches, long swims, desert crossings, mountain climbs, and other prolonged physical strain.
This does not grant water breathing, but it makes the body remarkably reluctant to run out of air.
- Hardened Humors
The potion improves the body’s response to poison, disease, and internal corruption.
After drinking the potion:
- You gain a +1 bonus to Constitution saving throws.
- You have advantage on saving throws against nonmagical disease.
- Once per long rest, when you fail a saving throw against poison, disease, or exhaustion, you may reroll the saving throw. You must use the new result.
- Surge of Borrowed Endurance
For the first 30 days after drinking the potion, the remaining aetheric charge within your body can be called upon in moments of need.
As a bonus action, you may gain temporary hit points equal to 2d8 + your Constitution modifier.
Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest. After 30 days, this feature fades as the potion’s magic becomes fully integrated into your body.
Item Bonuses
Attribute Bonus:
Your Constitution score permanently increases by +2, to a maximum of 24.
Armor Bonus:
None.
Skill Bonus:
After drinking the potion, you gain a +1 bonus to Constitution-based ability checks and saving throws related to endurance, pain tolerance, holding breath, resisting fatigue, or surviving environmental hardship.
At the DM’s discretion, this may apply to checks involving long-distance travel, extreme climates, starvation, dehydration, poison exposure, or strenuous labor.
Proficiency Bonus:
If you are proficient in Constitution saving throws, you may add an additional +1 bonus to one Constitution saving throw per long rest.
If you are not proficient in Constitution saving throws, the potion does not grant proficiency, but it still provides the +1 Constitution saving throw bonus from Hardened Humors.
Drawbacks and Risks
- Aetheric Chill
For 7 days after drinking the potion, your body runs cold as the magic settles.
During this time:
- You have disadvantage on Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) checks requiring delicate finger control.
- You feel cold even in warm environments.
- Magical healing used on you restores 1 fewer hit point per die rolled, minimum reduction of 1 total hit point.
After 7 days, this drawback ends.
- Heavy Blood
The potion thickens and stabilizes the imbiber’s life force, but this can make sudden bursts of movement feel slightly sluggish.
For 30 days after drinking the potion:
- Your walking speed is reduced by 5 feet during the first round of combat.
- This penalty does not apply if you are already moving, mounted, flying, swimming, or under the effect of magical haste or similar magic.
After the first round of combat, your speed returns to normal.
- Overcharged Humors
If a creature drinks a second Aetherglass Vitalis Draught, or drinks it while under another permanent body-altering elixir, they must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw.
On a success, the second potion has no effect.
On a failure, the creature suffers one level of exhaustion and gains no benefit from the second potion. This exhaustion cannot be removed until the creature finishes a long rest and receives magical healing.
Lore and History
The Aetherglass Vitalis Draught was first developed by alchemists working along the borderlands where adventurers routinely returned half-frozen, poisoned, fevered, drowned, or otherwise creatively mangled by Aetheris’ more enthusiastic hazards. Early versions were unstable and had an unfortunate tendency to turn fingernails translucent or make the drinker’s heartbeat audible across a quiet room. Modern versions are rarer, cleaner, and far more valuable, often brewed only by master alchemists with access to aetherglass vessels, mineral-rich springwater, powdered pearlbone, frostbloom extract, and a single drop of blood willingly given by the future imbiber.
Additional Roleplay Features
- Crystal Pulse
For several weeks after drinking the potion, your pulse may briefly glow blue-green beneath your skin during moments of strain, fear, or anger. This is harmless, but observant healers and alchemists can recognize it as the sign of a permanent vitality draught.
- Taste of Cold Rain
The imbiber permanently develops a faint preference for cold water, mineral-heavy food, salted broth, and iron-rich meals. Fine wine may taste slightly metallic for a few months. This is not dangerous, merely inconvenient at noble dinners where people keep asking why you are glaring at the soup.
- The Body Remembers
Once per month, after surviving a serious injury, poison, disease, or exhausting journey, the imbiber may dream of the bottle’s interior: blue light, slow clouds, and a distant heartbeat. These dreams sometimes reveal whether the body is fighting off a hidden illness, curse, parasite, or slow poison.

Summary of Item
The Aetherglass Vitalis Draught is a Very Rare potion that permanently increases the imbiber’s Constitution by +2, to a maximum of 24. It also improves breath control, endurance, resistance to disease and poison, and grants a short-term reserve of temporary hit points during the first month after consumption. Its drawbacks are manageable but flavorful: temporary chill, slightly sluggish early combat response, and risk from overuse. It is a coveted potion for adventurers who want their body to become less negotiable with death.
“The weak call it endurance. The wise call it preparation. The dying call it unfair.”
