Specialized Artisan's Tools
"Magic is not merely cast—it is woven. Every enchantment leaves behind threads that bind intent to reality. Arcane weavers learn to perceive these threads and, with extraordinary care, manipulate the weave itself."
A specialized toolkit used by magical scholars, artificers, wardwrights, and arcane architects for the maintenance, diagnosis, and authorized access of Arcane magical constructions.
Prerequisites: You must possess the Spellcasting or Pact Magic feature, and have proficiency in the Arcana skill. Without both, a creature cannot use the techniques below.
The Weaver's Trance
Activation: 1 uninterrupted minute of focus, free hands, and somatic manipulation of the tools. This is not a spell, requires no spell slot, and cannot be Counterspelled.
Maintenance: Requires your Concentration (as if concentrating on a spell).
Perception: While in the trance you perceive only the structural weave of nearby arcane magic within your tier's sight range — connections, anchors, bindings, channels, and trigger threads. You do not perceive creatures, objects, or hidden features beyond what your senses normally reveal, and you do not learn spell names, schools of magic, purpose, alignment, or whether an effect is beneficial or harmful.
The trance ends if: your concentration ends, you become incapacitated, you dismiss it, or you begin casting another spell requiring concentration.
Using the Tools
While in the Weaver's Trance, you may use your Action to manipulate threads with the appropriate instrument. Each attempt requires a successful Intelligence (Arcana) check against a DC set by the GM. (Note: Under 2024 rules, having proficiency in both the tools and the Arcana skill grants Advantage on these checks).
Apprentice Tools (Uncommon | 250 gp)
- Sight Range: 30 feet, line of sight.
- Lens: Observe magical threads and their structure.
- Scalpel or Shears (1 Action): Temporarily sever a visible thread. The magic is not destroyed; the thread naturally reforms when the effect refreshes or repairs itself (typically 1 minute). Defensive wards and lair magic may restore immediately.
Journeyman Tools (Rare | 2,500 gp)
- Extended Sight: 60 feet, line of sight. Visible through up to 10 feet of barriers.
- Tweezers (1 Action): Pinch and examine a single thread. Learn one fact: approximate strength, whether it is sustaining another effect, whether it is a trigger, whether it is currently active, or one structural property determined by the GM.
- Brush (1 Action): Soften or blur a thread rather than cutting it. Grants Advantage on the next saving throw imposed by that magical effect.
Masterwork Tools (Very Rare | 25,000 gp)
- Master Sight: 60 feet, line of sight. Visible through barriers up to 30 feet thick.
- Quill (1 Action): Write or reconnect an existing magical thread. Cannot create new magic.
- Eraser (1 Action): Remove an existing magical connection that is no longer actively sustained. Powerful enchantments may resist.
- Copy & Paste (2 Actions): Spend 1 Action to select a minor magical thread, then a second Action to place it elsewhere within reach (up to 10 feet). Relocates one minor function on a high-DC Arcana check.
Primal and Divine Blindspots
Arcane Weaving Tools are incompatible with magic drawn from the Outer Planes (Divine) or the life force of the world (Primal). They appear as chaotic static or blinding glare. Any attempt to alter them automatically fails, and the Weaver takes backlash damage (psychic from Divine, radiant/force from Primal; GM determines amount).
Notes: Requires Spellcasting/Pact Magic and Arcana proficiency. Spend 1 minute to enter a Weaver's Trance (Concentration) to see the structural weave of nearby magic. While in the trance, use an Action to manipulate threads based on your tool's tier (Cut, Examine, Blur, Reconnect, Erase, or Relocate). Attempting to alter Primal or Divine magic automatically fails and causes backlash damage., Utility
