Aegis of the First Scribe

Armor (Shield), Legendary (Requires Attunement by a Rune-Crafter)

"A sword writes destruction. A shield writes protection."

The Aegis of the First Scribe is a massive round shield forged from star-forged steel and engraved with thousands of concentric Runic Circles. Its face resembles an unfinished spell, with empty layers waiting to be filled by its wielder. When mana flows through it, the engraved runes ignite one by one, eventually forming an enormous glowing magic circle across the shield's surface.

Rather than simply blocking attacks, the shield rewrites them.

Arrows become harmless wind. Fire becomes warmth. Magic becomes ink waiting to be rewritten.

Runic Focus

The Aegis can serve as your Rune-Craft focus.

While wielding it:

  • You can inscribe Runic Circles directly onto the shield.

  • You no longer need a free hand to perform Rune-Craft.

  • Defensive Rune-Craft spells can originate from the shield instead of yourself.

Living Barrier

The shield grants a +3 bonus to AC.

Whenever a creature misses you with an attack, faint runes briefly appear across the shield.

You gain 1 Rune Charge (maximum of 5).

Rune Charges disappear when you finish a Short or Long Rest.

Reactive Inscription

When you are hit by an attack, you may expend 1 Rune Charge to instantly inscribe a defensive Runic Circle without using an action.

You may immediately cast one Rune-Craft spell that:

  • targets only yourself,

  • creates a barrier,

  • grants temporary hit points,

  • or has a casting time of 1 action and directly prevents or reduces damage.

The spell resolves before the triggering attack deals damage.

You still pay its Mana cost.

Runic Reflection

Your shield learns from the magic it blocks.

When you succeed on a saving throw against a spell or magical effect, you may use your reaction to record fragments of its Runic Structure.

Choose one:

  • Regain Mana equal to half the spell's level (minimum 1).

  • Gain advantage on your next Rune Analysis check against that spell.

  • Redirect part of the spell, forcing another creature within 30 feet to make the same saving throw against half of the spell's effects.

You may use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per Long Rest.

Guardian's Script

As an action, you may spend 3 Mana to inscribe a massive Runic Circle across the shield.

For 1 minute, allies within 15 feet of you gain:

  • +2 AC

  • Advantage on saving throws against spells

  • Resistance to force damage

The aura moves with you.

Immutable Rune

The shield bears one permanent Modifier Rune chosen at the end of each Long Rest.

Choose one:

  • ⩙ Stop — You cannot be forcibly moved while wielding the shield.

  • ⋖ Weaken — Creatures you hit with opportunity attacks deal half damage until the end of their turn.

  • ⦢ Control — Allies within 10 feet have advantage on checks and saves against forced movement or grapples.

  • ∞ Endure — Temporary hit points you grant last until your next Long Rest unless depleted.

The chosen rune remains active until you finish your next Long Rest.

Absolute Aegis

Once per Long Rest, as a Bonus Action, you awaken the shield's true inscription for 1 minute.

During this time:

  • Your AC increases by +2.

  • You gain resistance to all damage.

  • You have advantage on all saving throws.

  • You cannot be knocked prone, grappled, restrained, or forcibly moved.

  • Every allied creature within 30 feet gains half cover.

  • Whenever a creature within 30 feet takes damage, you may use your reaction to redirect up to half of that damage to yourself. Damage redirected this way is reduced by your resistances.

The Wall Between Worlds

"The First Scribe wrote the world into existence.

The Aegis remembers the line that kept the Void outside."

Once per Long Rest, if you or a creature within 30 feet would be reduced to 0 hit points, you may use your reaction to invoke the shield's oldest rune.

A colossal Runic Circle erupts from the shield, freezing reality for an instant.

Choose one:

  • The triggering creature instead drops to 1 hit point, becomes immune to all damage until the end of its next turn, and immediately regains Mana equal to your Charisma modifier.

  • A 60-foot-radius barrier surrounds you for 1 minute. Hostile creatures cannot teleport into or through the barrier, and ranged attacks and spells originating from outside the barrier cannot pass through it unless they originate from an artifact, deity, or a creature your DM rules possesses comparable power.

After using this feature, every rune on the shield goes dark until you finish a Long Rest.

Appearance

The Aegis of the First Scribe is a broad, circular shield of black-and-silver metal. Its face is etched with dozens of concentric rings, each filled with tiny runes that constantly shift and rearrange themselves. At its center is a blank circular plate, where new Runic Circles bloom into existence whenever the wielder channels mana. When raised in defense, the runes spread outward into a radiant magical sigil that can cover not only the bearer, but entire groups of allies. Legends say it does not stop attacks by force—it simply edits the world so that the attack was never destined to strike.
