Amulet of Fiend's Ire

Wondrous Item, Rare (Requires Attunement)

This heavy obsidian amulet is carved in the likeness of a snarling demonic face. It cold-snaps to the touch, absorbing the ambient heat around the wearer's chest to mask their lifeforce.

Mechanics and Abilities

  • Veil of the Hunted: While wearing and attuned to this amulet, your location cannot be targeted by any divination magic used by Fiends, and you cannot be perceived through a Fiend's sensory abilities (such as Truesight or Tremorsense) up to a range of 120 feet. To the specific demon bound to you, you appear completely invisible and non-existent.
  • Slipped Mask: The amulet requires focus to maintain the shroud. Whenever you take damage, roll a d20. On a 1, the veil briefly flickers. The attached demon catches a fleeting glimpse of your location, driving it into a distant, unseen rage.
  • Fiend's Ire: When the mask slips (via a roll of 1 on the Slipped Mask feature), the amulet channels the sudden, explosive fury of your pursuing fiend. A shockwave of hellfire erupts from the amulet. Every creature within a 10-foot radius of you must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 4d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. Because the energy channels through you, you take half of the rolled damage directly (ignoring any fire resistance you may have).

The Attunement Ritual: Severing the Thread

To attune to the amulet, you must spend a short rest focusing solely on the item while performing the following steps:

  1. The Blood Seal: You must press the sharp obsidian teeth of the amulet into your palm or chest hard enough to draw blood (taking 1d4 piercing damage). The amulet drinks the blood, turning the cold stone a deep, bruised crimson.
  2. The Mental Sever: You must enter a deep trance. In this trance, you visually confront the psychic thread linking you to your attached demon. You must focus your willpower to forcefully snap that thread and loop it into the amulet instead.
  3. The Final Threshold: At the climax of the short rest, you must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw.
    • On a success: The thread snaps. The amulet grows ice-cold, the crimson color vanishes, and you are successfully hidden.
    • On a failure: The attached demon feels the thread pull. You fail to attune, take 2d6 psychic damage from the demon's sudden mental backlash, and cannot attempt to attune again until the next dawn.
