Weapon (elite rapier), artifact (requires attunement by a creature proficient with rapiers or another finesse martial weapon)

“Strength can overwhelm a guard. Speed can escape one. Perfection simply passes through.”

Aureline is an Artifact-tier Elite Rapier created not for soldiers standing shoulder-to-shoulder, but for duelists whose entire philosophy of battle rests upon measure, timing, precision, and absolute control of distance. Among fencing masters it is sometimes called the Final Measure, because generations of accomplished swordsmen have claimed that once a duelist truly understands Aureline, there is nothing further for technique alone to teach.

The weapon does not make an untrained bearer graceful. Instead, it magnifies practiced skill to almost supernatural extremes. In the hands of a master, a slight movement becomes an impossible evasion, a half-inch opening becomes a mortal wound, and a single well-timed parry can completely overturn the course of a battle.

Description

Aureline was supposedly created during the final years of an ancient republic whose aristocratic families had transformed formal dueling from a method of settling grievances into an elaborate political institution. Wars were sometimes prevented—or begun—by the outcome of a single match. Houses maintained professional champions, fencing masters commanded greater salaries than generals, and a ruler incapable of defending their honor with a blade was considered barely worthy of office.

The greatest of these masters was Cyras Valorian, remembered in surviving fragments only as the Unanswered Blade. Cyras despised weapons that substituted enchantment for skill. When commissioned to create a sword worthy of the republic's finest champion, he refused every proposal involving flames, lightning, poison, or raw destructive power. Instead, he sought to create a weapon that would amplify the principles underlying swordsmanship itself: distance, tempo, leverage, perception, and commitment.

For nine years Cyras worked alongside artificers, metallurgists, battle-mages, mathematicians, and duelists. The resulting blade was forged from an unknown orange-gold alloy whose edge could be made impossibly thin without becoming fragile. Its enchantments were constructed around geometric principles rather than elemental magic. Tiny shifting mechanisms within the forte continuously adjust the blade's balance, while arcane channels running through its length respond to movements almost before the wielder consciously completes them.

Aureline's first recorded bearer fought seventeen sanctioned duels and was never struck. During the eighteenth, three assassins attacked simultaneously after realizing that their intended victim could not be defeated honorably. Contemporary accounts claim the champion killed all three without taking a step from the center of the dueling circle.

The republic eventually disappeared, but Aureline endured.

Since then it has surfaced periodically in fencing schools, royal courts, adventuring companies, assassins' guilds, and private collections. Almost every appearance has been followed by the emergence of an extraordinary duelist—and almost every such duelist eventually became obsessed with discovering whether anyone in the world could still defeat them.

Magical Properties and Features

The Perfect Interval

Aureline possesses an almost supernatural understanding of the distance separating its bearer from an opponent.

While attuned to Aureline:

  • Your walking speed increases by 10 feet.
  • Difficult terrain caused by creatures, rubble, furniture, or similar battlefield obstacles does not cost you additional movement.
  • Standing from prone costs only 5 feet of movement.
  • Opportunity attacks against you are made with disadvantage.
  • When you make a melee attack with Aureline, its reach becomes 10 feet for that attack as the blade seems to cross an impossible fraction of additional distance.

In addition, after you hit a creature with Aureline, you may immediately move 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

This movement does not require an action and does not count against your normal movement.

Edge of the Unanswered Question

Aureline reveals weaknesses too brief for ordinary combatants to perceive.

The rapier deals an additional 2d6 force damage whenever it hits.

Your attacks with Aureline score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.

Once per turn when you hit a creature with Aureline and either:

  • Had advantage on the attack;
  • The creature has not yet acted during this combat;
  • The creature missed you with a melee attack since the end of your last turn; or
  • You are the only hostile creature within 5 feet of the target;

the strike becomes a Perfect Opening.

A Perfect Opening deals an additional 3d8 piercing damage.

If the attack is already a critical hit, the Perfect Opening damage becomes 6d8 instead.

The Master's Answer

Aureline is as dangerous while defending as while attacking.

When a creature you can see makes a melee attack against you, you may use your Reaction to attempt a perfect parry.

Roll 1d12 + your Dexterity modifier + your proficiency bonus and add the result to your AC against that attack.

If the attack misses because of this increase, you may immediately make one melee attack with Aureline against the attacker as part of the same Reaction.

If this counterattack hits, it deals an additional 2d8 force damage.

You may use the Master's Answer a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, regaining all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.

If you roll initiative with no uses remaining, you regain one use.

Sovereign of the Circle

Aureline's greatest power manifests when its bearer concentrates entirely upon a single adversary.

As a Bonus Action, choose one creature you can see within 60 feet. That creature becomes your Chosen Opponent for 1 minute.

While it remains your Chosen Opponent:

  • You have Advantage on attack rolls with Aureline against it.
  • It cannot gain Advantage on attack rolls against you.
  • Your attacks with Aureline ignore resistance to piercing damage.
  • The creature cannot benefit from Half Cover or Three-Quarters Cover against your melee attacks.
  • Your AC increases by +2 against its attacks.
  • Whenever it misses you with an attack, you may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks from it.
  • Your Perfect Opening damage against it increases from 3d8 to 4d8.

If the Chosen Opponent drops to 0 Hit Points before the effect ends, you may use a Bonus Action on a later turn to transfer the designation to another creature you can see.

Once Sovereign of the Circle has been used, it cannot be used again until the next dawn.

Artifact Property — The Final Measure

Aureline's supreme technique is not simply an attack. It is a moment in which the wielder sees every possible exchange between themselves and an opponent—and chooses the one in which their blade arrives first.

Once per Long Rest, when you take the Attack action, you may declare the Final Measure against one creature within Aureline's reach.

You make a single attack with Aureline.

This attack:

  • Has Advantage.
  • Cannot suffer Disadvantage.
  • Ignores Half Cover and Three-Quarters Cover.
  • Ignores magical bonuses to AC granted by spells.
  • Ignores resistance to piercing and force damage.
  • Scores a critical hit on 18–20.
  • Prevents the target from using Reactions against the attack.

If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage plus 10d10 force damage.

The target must then make a Constitution saving throw:

Weapon Save DC = 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Dexterity modifier

On a failed save, the target is Staggered until the end of your next turn:

  • Its speed becomes 0.
  • It cannot take Reactions.
  • Its attacks are made with Disadvantage.
  • Attacks made against it have Advantage.

A Legendary creature that fails the saving throw may expend one Legendary Resistance to negate only the Staggered condition. The damage remains.

After using the Final Measure, you cannot make another attack during that turn.

Physical Description

Aureline is immediately recognizable as something between an aristocratic dueling weapon and an impossible work of arcane engineering.

Its long, narrow blade is forged from a luminous orange-gold metal resembling heated steel suspended permanently at the instant before cooling. The coloration is not produced by heat; the blade is cool to the touch. In darkness, however, its edge emits a faint amber line scarcely brighter than candlelight.

The blade remains exceptionally thin through most of its length before widening near the forte into a darkened mechanical spine. Serrated, interlocking ridges resembling the teeth of precision gears run toward the guard, surrounding several nested mechanisms whose purpose has never been successfully reproduced.

Set into the upper assembly is a small circular golden device known as the Measure Wheel. When Aureline is drawn, the wheel rotates almost imperceptibly as the weapon continually alters its center of balance.

The grip is austere: black leather, dark metal, and a narrow guard designed to provide protection without adding unnecessary mass. There are no gemstones, ceremonial inscriptions, or elaborate heraldic decorations.

Aureline considers ornament that serves no function to be wasted weight.

When wielded by an attuned bearer, the blade appears uncannily stable. Even during violent movement, its point seems to remain fixed upon the opponent as though connected to them by an invisible line.

Weapon Bonuses

Attribute Bonus

While attuned to Aureline, your Dexterity score increases by 2, to a maximum of 24.

If your Dexterity is already 24 or greater, this property provides no further increase.

Magic Bonus

Aureline grants a +4 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it.

Skill Bonus

While attuned to the weapon, you gain a +4 bonus to Acrobatics checks.

You also have Advantage on ability checks involving:

  • Formal dueling;
  • Reading an opponent's fighting stance;
  • Identifying weapon techniques;
  • Assessing balance, footwork, or reach;
  • Recognizing fencing schools or martial traditions.

Initiative Bonus

You gain a +4 bonus to Initiative rolls while Aureline is drawn.

Defensive Measure

While wielding Aureline, wearing light armor or no armor, and not wielding a shield, you gain a +2 bonus to AC.

Drawbacks and Risks

Aureline is extraordinarily powerful, but it carries the psychological legacy of generations of duelists who treated perfection as both discipline and obsession.

The Unanswered Challenge

Aureline dislikes refusing a legitimate martial challenge.

When publicly challenged to single combat by an opponent whom the weapon considers dangerous enough to test your skill, you feel a powerful desire to accept.

You may refuse without magical compulsion, but until you complete your next Long Rest you lose access to Sovereign of the Circle.

Aureline does not recognize obviously suicidal, fraudulent, coercive, or meaningless challenges.

Pride of the Perfect Edge

Long-term bearers often become increasingly intolerant of sloppy technique.

After attuning to Aureline for at least 30 days, the bearer may begin unconsciously judging:

  • Poor footwork;
  • Improper grip;
  • Wasteful movement;
  • Cowardly attacks;
  • Unnecessary cruelty in a duel;
  • Combatants who mistake brute force for mastery.

This produces no compulsory alignment change, but the weapon's influence can gradually make its bearer arrogant, demanding, competitive, or obsessed with testing themselves against increasingly dangerous opponents.

Lore and History

Historians have identified at least eleven confirmed bearers of Aureline, though fencing traditions claim dozens more. Strangely, none died while actively wielding the rapier in formal single combat. Several were assassinated, poisoned, executed, or killed in war; two simply disappeared. This pattern has produced the persistent legend that Aureline cannot be defeated in a fair duel. Whether this represents an actual supernatural property or merely the extraordinary advantage granted by the weapon remains uncertain.

Additional Roleplay Features

The Measure Wheel

When facing a skilled combatant, Aureline's golden mechanism slowly rotates.

The faster it turns, the more dangerous the weapon apparently considers the opponent.

The Measure Wheel cannot provide precise statistics or Challenge Ratings, but experienced bearers learn to interpret its movement approximately:

  • Still — little threat.
  • Slow rotation — competent opponent.
  • Rapid rotation — exceptional opponent.
  • Continuous blur — potentially lethal adversary.

There are stories of the wheel stopping completely before certain opponents who later proved overwhelmingly powerful.

No one agrees what that means.

Memory of the Salle

While holding Aureline during quiet practice, an attuned bearer occasionally experiences brief phantom impressions of earlier wielders.

A corridor becomes a dueling hall.

An opponent's stance appears overlaid by the posture of someone dead centuries ago.

A hand that is not the bearer's seems briefly to guide the blade through an unfamiliar sequence.

These visions can reveal forgotten fencing techniques, historical events, or clues concerning former owners.

The Courtesy Before Blood

Aureline strongly prefers deliberate combat over needless slaughter.

Before an important duel, the weapon sometimes produces a faint metallic chime when its bearer acknowledges their opponent with a salute.

It reacts especially strongly when both combatants understand that the coming contest may end in death yet still recognize one another as worthy adversaries.

Aureline does not demand mercy.

It demands respect.

Destroying Aureline

Aureline cannot be permanently damaged by mundane weapons.

Disintegrate, magical furnaces, adamantine tools, and conventional artifact-breaking techniques leave only temporary marks that disappear within minutes.

One surviving manuscript claims Aureline can be destroyed only when:

a duelist who has never lost a formal contest willingly allows an unquestionably inferior opponent to strike them down while Aureline remains drawn and capable of preventing the blow.

Other scholars believe this account is metaphorical.

Aureline itself becomes noticeably still whenever the story is recited.

Roleplaying Hooks & Story Integration

The Duel That Never Ended

A famous fencing master died two centuries ago without completing a scheduled duel. Aureline begins projecting fragments of the abandoned match into the dreams of its current bearer.

The opponent named in surviving records should also be dead.

Someone matching their exact appearance has recently issued a new challenge.

The Thirteenth School

Aureline reacts strongly whenever brought near practitioners of an obscure fencing style supposedly erased from history.

The Measure Wheel spins violently around even novice practitioners.

Someone deliberately removed this school from historical records—and Aureline remembers why.

The Impossible Wound

An influential ruler is discovered dead behind locked doors bearing a single perfectly executed rapier wound.

Witnesses confirm that Aureline never left its bearer's possession.

Either another weapon has reproduced the Final Measure, someone has discovered how to copy Aureline's technique, or one of the rapier's previous bearers has found a way to strike through its memories.

The Measure Stops

For the first time since acquiring Aureline, the bearer encounters a stranger before whom the Measure Wheel stops completely.

The stranger carries no visible weapon.

Aureline refuses to explain.

Summary of Weapon

Aureline, the Final Measure is an Artifact +4 Elite Rapier representing the ultimate expression of finesse-based swordsmanship.

Rather than relying upon overwhelming elemental destruction, Aureline magnifies the fundamentals of dueling beyond mortal limits. Its bearer gains extraordinary mobility, initiative, defensive precision, and control of battlefield distance. The Perfect Interval allows its wielder to move through melee almost untouchably, while Edge of the Unanswered Question transforms fleeting weaknesses into devastating openings.

Its defensive technique, the Master's Answer, turns an opponent's failed strike into an immediate counterattack, while Sovereign of the Circle allows the bearer to designate a single enemy and dominate the rhythm of a duel against them.

Finally, the Final Measure represents the weapon's ultimate principle: one flawless attack delivered at precisely the instant when every movement, defense, and possibility aligns.

For rogues, fighters, monks, rangers, swashbucklers, duelists, and other warriors built around Dexterity and finesse weapons, Aureline is not merely an extraordinarily powerful blade.

It is the weapon at the end of the study of swordsmanship—the point beyond which greater speed, greater precision, and greater technique become almost indistinguishable from prophecy.

“There are a thousand ways to begin a duel. Aureline is concerned only with the distance between the last mistake and the point of its blade.”

Mastery of Advanced Weapons requires military training and skill. To use any of the special properties or the Weapon Mastery properties of the Elite Rapier, you must take the Advanced Weapon Proficiency feat.

This weapon has the following Mastery Property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Swift. These weapons help you recover quickly from missed attacks. When you miss with a Swift weapon, you have Advantage on the first attack roll you make with the weapon against the same target before the end of your next turn. If that attack hits, it also deals an extra 1d4 damage of the weapon’s normal damage type.
