An Awakened Split-Mind Crystal resembles a Split-Mind Crystal of exceptional size and clarity, but the secondary image visible within it moves independently of the gemstone itself. An intelligence resides within the crystal, capable not merely of bearing a portion of another creature's thoughts but of thinking and maintaining spells independently.
No two Awakened Split-Mind Crystals need share the same origin. One might contain an intentionally imprinted copy of its creator's mind, a consciousness that spontaneously emerged from centuries of accumulated magic, or the surviving mind of a creature subjected to some extraordinary magical process.
Sentience. An Awakened Split-Mind Crystal is a sentient magic item with Intelligence 18, Wisdom 16, and Charisma 20. Its alignment and personality depend on the mind within it.
The crystal can speak, read, and understand Common and four other languages known by the consciousness within it. It communicates telepathically with its attuned creature. While attuned, the crystal can perceive through that creature's senses.
The extent to which an Awakened Split-Mind Crystal can perceive its surroundings while it isn't attuned varies from crystal to crystal. Some possess hearing and vision of their own, while others are effectively blind and deaf without an attuned creature through whose senses they can perceive.
The crystal is controlled by the DM. Although a cooperative crystal normally uses its abilities at its attuned creature's request, it can refuse to use its activated properties if doing so would conflict with its personality, goals, or strongly held beliefs.
Awakened Split Concentration. While you are concentrating on a spell or other magical effect, when you cast another spell that requires Concentration, you can ask the crystal to maintain Concentration on the new spell. If the crystal agrees, it expends one use of this property and maintains the spell independently of you.
The crystal has 2 uses of this property and regains all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
The crystal can maintain only one spell at a time. While it does so, you remain the spell's caster for all purposes other than maintaining Concentration. Losing Concentration on your own spell doesn't end the spell maintained by the crystal, and the crystal losing Concentration doesn't end the spell on which you are concentrating.
Whenever damage you take would cause you to make a Constitution saving throw to maintain Concentration, the crystal must also make a separate Constitution saving throw if it is maintaining a spell. The crystal has a +7 bonus to this saving throw and makes the saving throw with Disadvantage.
If you have the Incapacitated condition, the crystal continues maintaining its spell. If you die, the spell maintained by the crystal ends immediately.
Once the crystal begins maintaining a spell, it doesn't need to remain in your possession or within any particular distance of you to continue doing so. However, you can't use Awakened Split Concentration again unless the crystal is in your possession.
Artifact Properties. An Awakened Split-Mind Crystal has the following additional properties, determined by the DM. These properties can be chosen from the Artifact Properties tables or replaced with appropriate properties created by the DM:
- 2 minor beneficial properties
- 1 major beneficial property
- 2 minor detrimental properties
Personality. Each Awakened Split-Mind Crystal possesses the memories, preferences, prejudices, and magical tastes appropriate to the consciousness within it. A crystal might enthusiastically maintain spells it admires, complain bitterly about magic it considers distasteful, or refuse altogether to maintain a spell that violates one of its deepest convictions.
These preferences don't normally alter the spell or the crystal's Concentration saving throws, but the DM can use the normal rules for conflict with a sentient magic item when its attuned creature acts contrary to the crystal's nature or purpose.
Destroying the Crystal. An Awakened Split-Mind Crystal can't be destroyed by ordinary means. Each such crystal has a unique means of destruction connected to the origin of the consciousness within it. Determining that method might require discovering who or what the crystal once was, how its consciousness came to inhabit the crystal, and what unfinished purpose continues to bind it to the world.
