Wondrous Item, legendary
This perfectly smooth, 4-inch cube of polished obsidian is bound by intricate, floating bands of pure platinum. When a creature activates the device, the obsidian faces slide apart like a complex puzzle box, revealing a hollow, glowing pocket dimension inside that can expand to accommodate an item of any size.
Deconstruct and Realign
As a downtime activity taking 1 hour, you can place one magic item (the Source) inside the open tesseract. Once the cube clicks shut, the platinum rings spin rapidly. Inside, a multi-dimensional matrix of hard-light lasers systematically dissolves the physical form of the item, trapping its raw magical essence within the cube's pocket dimension.
The tesseract can hold this "magical charge" indefinitely. At any point later, you can open the cube, place a nonmagical item of a similar type (the Target) inside, and seal it. The platinum bands spin in reverse, weaving the stored magical matrix directly into the molecular structure of the new object.
  • Example: An Axe of Dwarven Throwing placed inside can transfer its matrix to a mundane Warhammer or Handaxe later, but not to a shield or a suit of armor.
Once the process is finished, the Source item is gone forever, and the Target emerges from the cube possessing all of the original item's magical properties, bonuses, and attunement requirements.
System Constraints
To prevent a catastrophic arcane meltdown, the tesseract operates under rigid magical protocols:
  • The Isolation Protocol: The Target item must be completely mundane. If you place an already-magical item inside a charged tesseract, the device violently rejects it. The cube forces itself open, the stored matrix is lost, the target item is destroyed, and the user takes 4d10 force damage from the arcane backfire.
  • The Structural Protocol: The mechanical function of the target item must match the intent of the magic. You can move weapon magic to another weapon, or armor magic to another piece of armor.
** Arcane Cool-Down (Recharge)**
The process of transferring a magical matrix completely drains the tesseract's internal platinum capacitors. Once a rewritten item is removed, the device locks tight and its glowing interior goes completely dark.
The tesseract requires time to naturally absorb background magical energy (the Weave) and reboot its systems. The number of days it remains locked depends entirely on the rarity of the item that was just created:
Created Item Rarity Cool-Down Duration
Common 1 day
Uncommon 3 days
Rare 7 days
Very Rare 14 days
Legendary / Artifact 30 days
While cooling down, the tesseract cannot be opened, moved into extra-dimensional spaces (like a Bag of Holding), or used in any capacity.
