Aetherium Orbs
Wondrous item, unique, requires attunement by a resonance-keyed warlock
The Aetherium Orbs are a set of three polished copper spheres, each built around a rare Aetherium core. Though simple in appearance, the orbs function together as a highly adaptable arcane system capable of manipulating both physical matter and magical energy.
At rest, each orb appears as a smooth sphere of darkened copper, faintly warm to the touch. A subtle vibration can sometimes be felt through the metal, as though the core within is humming at a frequency just beneath hearing.
The copper shell of each orb is magically responsive to the wielder’s intent. It can unfold, stretch, divide, and reshape itself into simple forms such as tendrils, wires, blades, hooks, clamps, filaments, anchors, and crude tools. The amount of copper remains constant; the orbs reshape existing material rather than creating it.
At the heart of each orb is Aetherium, a strange substance possessing extraordinary conductivity to magical energy. Aetherium does not merely store magic—it allows arcane force to travel through it with exceptionally little resistance. When multiple orbs are positioned around an area, their cores may function as linked nodes within a larger magical circuit.
Through careful positioning and manipulation, the orbs can redirect magical attacks through unusual trajectories, refract magical energy between multiple points, establish sympathetic links between creatures, and transmit magical force through conductive filaments.
The orbs themselves may also be drawn into extremely fine threads and spread throughout an environment. These threads can detect physical movement through tension and vibration, form traps and tripwires, connect distant objects, or create complex networks through which the wielder can sense disturbances in the surrounding area.
The orbs respond to the wielder’s mental commands through the resonance bond established during attunement and may be recalled to the wielder when needed. When not actively deployed, they remain close at hand until deliberately repositioned or reshaped.
To most observers, the Aetherium Orbs resemble an elegant piece of arcane engineering.
To someone caught inside their threads, they feel considerably more like a nervous system being constructed around them.
Attunement
The Aetherium Orbs require attunement by a warlock whose magical signature has been permanently resonance-keyed to their Aetherium cores.
During attunement, the cores synchronize with the warlock’s arcane presence, allowing the orbs to recognize their wielder, respond to mental commands, channel magical energy, and return when recalled.
Once resonance-keyed, the orbs cannot be fully controlled by another creature unless the existing bond is deliberately broken or rewritten through a specialized magical process.
All three Aetherium Orbs are treated as a single magic item and require only one attunement slot.
Notes: The Aetherium Constellation requires attunement by a warlock whose magical signature has been permanently resonance-keyed to its Aetherium cores. During attunement, the cores synchronize with the warlock’s arcane presence, allowing the orbs to recognize their wielder, respond to mental commands, channel magic, and return when recalled. Once keyed, the Constellation cannot be fully controlled by another creature unless the bond is deliberately broken or rewritten through a specialized magical process. All three orbs are treated as a single magic item and require only one attunement slot.
