Staff (quarterstaff), very rare (requires attunement by a One must find inner balance to wield the tool of Dissonance )

Forged by the God of Balance at the beginning of the mortal age, Equinox is not a weapon of good or evil. It is a weapon of choice.

The quarterstaff is divided perfectly down its length, with no side truly claiming dominance over the other. One half is forged from black celestial iron, cold and heavy, its surface etched with scenes of ancient battles, fallen kings, and warriors standing against impossible odds. This is the Aspect of Violence, the embodiment of strength, wrath, and the willingness to fight when peace can no longer protect what matters.

The other half is crafted from pale divine wood, smooth and warm beneath the hand. Golden runes spiral along its length, depicting healers, diplomats, monks, and enemies laying down their weapons. This is the Aspect of Peace, representing mercy, restraint, wisdom, and the strength required to end a conflict rather than simply win it.

At the center of the staff rests a pair of tiny golden scales. They constantly shift between the two halves, never settling completely to either side.

Equinox does not judge its wielder by how often they choose violence or peace. It judges whether they had the wisdom to know which was necessary.

When the violent half is awakened, the staff seems to grow heavier. Each strike carries the weight of divine judgment, and those who endure its blows feel their resolve begin to fracture. Their minds become clouded with fear, doubt, and the consequences of their own aggression, leaving them vulnerable to the staff's power.

When the peaceful half is awakened, the weapon becomes almost weightless. Its presence calms the battlefield, and those who have already been shaken by its violent aspect find their desire to fight slipping away. Warriors lower their weapons. Monsters hesitate. Even the most furious enemies can feel the unnatural certainty that the battle is no longer worth continuing.

The God of Balance forged Equinox with a single lesson:

"Strength without wisdom becomes destruction. Peace without strength becomes surrender. Only those who understand both can preserve the balance."

It is said that the staff has never been defeated in battle.

Not because it is the strongest weapon ever created—

but because its wielder always knows when the battle should end.

You have a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Aspect of Violence

As a bonus action, you awaken the black-iron half of the staff, which remains active until you use a bonus action to switch aspects.

While this aspect is active:

  • Your attacks with the staff deal an additional 2d8 radiant or necrotic damage (your choice on each hit).
  • Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with the staff, it must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier) or become Unbalanced until the end of your next turn.
  • An Unbalanced creature has disadvantage on all Wisdom saving throws.

Aspect of Peace

As a bonus action, you awaken the whitewood half of the staff, which remains active until you switch aspects.

While this aspect is active:

  • Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with the staff, it must make a Wisdom saving throw.
  • On a failed save, the creature is Pacified until the end of its next turn. While Pacified, the creature:
    • Cannot make weapon attacks or unarmed strikes.
    • Cannot cast spells that deal damage.
    • Can still move, Dodge, Dash, Disengage, Help, or cast non-damaging spells.
  • If the target is Unbalanced from the Aspect of Violence, it also has disadvantage on this saving throw.

Perfect Balance

Once per long rest, you may wield both aspects simultaneously for 1 minute.

While this feature is active:

  • Every hit deals an additional 2d8 radiant damage.
  • Creatures you hit become Unbalanced until the start of your next turn.
  • At the start of each Unbalanced creature's turn, it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, it becomes Pacified until the end of that turn.
  • Creatures that succeed on three Wisdom saving throws against this effect become immune to Perfect Balance for the remainder of its duration.

Proficiency with a Quarterstaff allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Topple. If you hit a creature with this weapon, you can force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
