Wondrous Item, very rare (requires attunement)

This massive leather-bound atlas contains hundreds of impossibly thin parchment pages, yet never seems to grow heavier or thicker. Its cover is embossed with roads, mountains, rivers, and coastlines that slowly shift as its bearer travels. Maps placed within the atlas are absorbed into its pages and cataloged according to their location. Blank pages fill themselves with precise lines of enchanted ink as the atlas records the travels of its attuned owner.

Endless Atlas. The atlas can store any number of nonmagical maps placed between its pages. After 1 minute, a map is absorbed into the book and magically reproduced. The original can then be removed without affecting the copy. The atlas automatically organizes its maps by plane, region, settlement, structure, and location. As a Magic action, you can name or describe a stored location, causing the atlas to open to the most relevant map.

Cartographer's Memory. As you travel, the atlas updates its maps with terrain, roads, settlements, landmarks, and other geographical features that you can perceive. It doesn't reveal locations or features you haven't observed.

Trace the Path. While holding the atlas, you can speak its command word as a Magic action to begin or end recording your route. While active, a thin line of enchanted ink continuously traces the path you travel on the appropriate page. The atlas records turns, intersections, stairs, doors you pass through, changes in elevation, and the approximate dimensions of areas you enter. Your current position is represented by a small moving mark.

Dungeon Mapping. When recording within a dungeon, building, cave system, ruin, or similar location, the atlas automatically creates a floor plan based on the areas you personally traverse and perceive. Separate floors and elevations appear on separate pages and are automatically linked by symbols marking stairs, ladders, shafts, portals, and other passages you used.

Annotations. While touching an open map, you can use a Magic action to speak a short description of a location you've observed. The atlas adds an appropriate symbol and up to 25 words of notation at that location. You can similarly erase one of your annotations.

Retrace the Route. While viewing a route you've personally recorded, you have Advantage on Wisdom (Survival) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks made to retrace that route or determine your position within the mapped area.

Limits of the Map. The atlas records only what you can reasonably perceive while traveling. It doesn't automatically reveal Secret Doors, hidden chambers, creatures, traps, invisible objects, illusions, or passages you haven't explored. If you discover such a feature, you can add it normally. Teleportation and similar instantaneous travel cause the traced route to end at the departure point and resume at the destination without revealing the space between them.
