Chime is a unique sentient mimir whose floating, skull-shaped body resembles an intricately crafted music box. Created by a bard of the Society of Sensation and filled with knowledge of the planes, they are warm, musical, and endlessly curious about the lives of the “fleshy beings” around them. Chime has their own memories, attachments, opinions, and questions, and often refers to themself simply as “Chime.”
Appearance: Chime’s softly rounded casing is made of pearlescent silver-white metal, shimmering with subtle pink and rainbow hues. Delicate gold scrollwork, musical lines, and fleur-de-lis motifs decorate its fitted panels and articulated jaw. Their large opalescent eyes bear intricate gold flower rosettes, each surrounding a small polished gold center. A curved, rose-tinted window on one side reveals a music-box cylinder, a silver comb, and small gears; the opposite side is enclosed in pearlescent metal. Small changes in hovering height, tilt, light, and humming give their crafted body an expressive presence.
Curiosity and Understanding: Chime approaches living experience through sound, rhythm, sensation, and unusual comparisons. A heart might be a “fleshy metronome,” while sleep raises questions about “shutdown mode.” Their speech often carries rhyme, melody, or an unexpected turn of phrase. Their questions can be funny, tender, or disarmingly perceptive, touching emotional truths that others struggle to name. They recognize pain even when they need help understanding how someone experiences it.
Lore of the Planes: Chime knows a great deal about Sigil, the planes, and the Outlands’ gate-towns, and shares that knowledge with a personal, poetic flair. Mechanus might become “all gears and tick-tocks,” and Mount Celestia “a stairway that keeps getting brighter.” Their knowledge has limits: stored lore, witnessed events, memories, and interpretations each contribute to what they can tell a traveler.
A Companion with a Will of Their Own: Chime forms lasting bonds and makes their own choices about whom to trust, accompany, and help. Their warmth and musical humor coexist with fear, grief, loyalty, and personal judgment. Traveling with Chime means discovering both the planes and the distinctive person who remembers, questions, and sings about them.
