This strange, shoddy-looking ball of iron is unimpressive upon first inspection; however, with a closer look, you will see a meticulously crafted item of genius design.
As an action, you can pull the trigger and throw the activated item up to a range of 30 feet. You can throw it into an unoccupied space or you can target the throw at a creature, in which case the item acts as an improvised weapon.
At the end of your next turn, the grenade activates. Each creature within 10 feet of the object must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 13). On a fail, the creature takes 2d6 piercing damage from the flying shrapnel erupting from the device. On a success, the creature takes half as much damage. Additionally, each creature within 5 feet of the object takes 1d6 fire damage on a failed saving throw and half as much on a success from the ignition and subsequent burst of flame.
After being used in this way, the item is destroyed.
If you are proficient in tinkerer's tools and study the device for 24 hours within a 3 day time period, you can learn to recreate this item. With a successful tinkering check (DC 15), 5 gold pieces worth of iron, and 10 gold pieces worth of a unique substance known as hoyao, you can create this item over the course of a long rest.
At the DM's discretion, you can spend time tinkering and discovering means of improving this item.
