Weapon (scimitar), uncommon

This scimitar is forged from steel tainted by the madness and violence of the Abyss, and is the favored weapon of devotees of the cult of Laozed, the demon-god of evil troglodytes. The metal of the blade is banded in a manner similar to that seen in Damascus steel, but when the weapon draws blood, the pattern appears to shift and flow, and the lighter bands in the patterning give off a faint red-orange glow, the color of the River Styx. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

As with all scimitars, this weapon generally deals slashing damage. However, if a creature with resistance or immunity to slashing damage is hit by an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed, and the creature is not also resistant to psychic damage, the creature takes the weapon's full damage, but as psychic damage.

Any good aligned creature who makes an attack - successful or not - against any non-evil aligned creature with an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed immediately suffers 1d4 psychic damage.

Any non-evil aligned Cleric, Druid, Paladin, or Ranger who makes an attack - successful or not - against any non-evil aligned creature with an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed is immediately cursed, loses the ability to use any spell-like abilities or cast any spells, whether divine or arcane in nature, and makes all ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws (including death saving throws) with disadvantage. The effects of this curse last until the non-evil aligned Cleric, Druid, Paladin, or Ranger (a) completes a short or long rest, and (b) is sprinkled with holy water -or- has the Remove Curse spell performed on them -or- makes a successful DC 18 Religion check (with disadvantage).

Any good aligned creature who makes a successful attack against any non-evil aligned creature with an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed takes 1d6 psychic damage, halved on a successful DC 15 Wisdom saving throw.

Any good aligned creature who kills any non-evil aligned creature with an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed immediately takes 1d10 psychic damage and suffers from short term madness (as described in the Dungeon Master's Guide) for 1d10 minutes, halved on a successful DC 18 Wisdom saving throw.

Any humanoid killed by an attack made with an Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed has its soul transported to the realm within the Abyss ruled by the troglodyte demon-god Laogzed. Laogzed consumes the soul at his leisure - a process which drives the soul mad (indefinite madness as described in the Dungeon Master's Guide). After it is consumed by Laogzed, the mad, tortured soul travels to the River Styx, where it is reborn as a manes demon (described in the Monster Manual).

An Abyssal Scimitar of Laogzed may be used with all of its effects without attunement. However, only attunement or a DC 17 Arcana or Religion check will reveal the full nature and description of the weapon - and its curse.

Proficiency with a Scimitar allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.


This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Nick. When you make the extra attack of the Light property, you can make it as part of the Attack action instead of as a Bonus Action. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
