This is a clear glass ring with a thin platinum wire encased in the band. It has a setting that holds a polished, square obsidian stone. The stone, however, has a crack down its center that must be mended for attunement.
These rings are given as a gift between transmuter wizards, passed from a teacher to their apprentice as a rite of passage at the end of an apprenticeship. They're usually gifted down from teacher to apprentice over several generations. It's common for a ring like this to be several hundred years old. They're sometimes known to have been passed down through a single family lineage of transmutation wizards where children are early students of their elders.
Once attuned, the wearer is granted the 2nd level Alter Self spell and can cast it three times per long rest without expending a spell slot.
If the wearer is a transmutation wizard, they can also cast the 2nd level Enhance Ability spell three times per long rest.
When the ring is removed, the obsidian stone cracks down its center and is no longer usable until attunement occurs again.
Notes: The wearer must cast the Mending spell on the cracked obsidian stone while wearing the ring.
