Weapon (greataxe), artifact (requires attunement)

Forged in the days of the Dawn War, where the gods battled the elder primordials and demon princes, this weapon was crafted in a joint effort by Moradin and Ehlonna, then given as gift to the Orc god Gruumsh.

Gruumsh used this axe in the Dawn War, Demon War and then bestowed it upon a chosen champion when the orcs were rallied to help over throw the Illithiad Empire in the Age of Great Arcana. This began the tradition of Gruumsh bestowing the axe upon champions from his kind during their times of need, before taking it back to wield himself.

During The Great Schism, when Gruumsh was banished along with the rest of The Fallen Fallen Brethren, his axe was left on the material plane, bestowed upon his last champion. After this champion's death, the axe was shattered by one of the Dragon Lords and its pieces hidden. Many orcs search for the axe, seeing it as the one who is chosen by the axe to wield it will be Gruumsh's chosen, a great leader for people.

Magic Weapon

The Axe of Gruumsh is a magic weapon that grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with it. The axe also deals an extra 1d8 fire and 1d8 lightning damage. The Axe also serves as a dwarven thrower and belt of storm giant strength.

Random Properties

The axe has the following randomly determined properties:

  • 2 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 major beneficial property
  • 2 minor detrimental properties
Blessings of a War God

While attuned to this axe axe, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have immunity to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from non-magical weapons.
  • You have resistance to psychic damage
  • You have advantage on persuasion checks against orcs and half-orcs.
Curse

The axe bears a curse that affects any non-orc or half-orc that becomes attuned to it. Even if the attunement ends, the curse remains. The creature besoms afflicted with madness, similar to a barbarians rage. While minor at first, it grows and grows. The creature also begins to take on the appearance of a orc, the transformation complete after seven days. The physical changes wrought by the axe aren’t considered magical in nature (and therefore can’t be dispelled), but they can be undone by any effect that removes a curse, such as a greater restoration or remove curse spell.

Destroying the Axe

The only way to destroy the axe is to strike the point where wood meets metal and stone with an arrow shot from the Bow of Corellon.

Proficiency with a Greataxe allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Cleave. If you hit a creature with a melee attack roll using this weapon, you can make a melee attack roll with the weapon against a second creature within 5 feet of the first that is also within your reach. On a hit, the second creature takes the weapon’s damage, but don’t add your ability modifier to that damage unless that modifier is negative. You can make this extra attack only once per turn.
