The item is a set of two tiny metallic tokens (the size and shape of a Ross Butler d4) that can be placed on any solid surface to trip up or clothesline targets.
As an action a token is placed on a surface and turned counter-clockwise, magically locking it in place. When the second token is placed on an opposing position within 30’, an invisible immovable arcane wire is formed connecting the two points. The DC to spot the tokens is 15. A spell or other effect that can sense the presence of magic, such as Detect Magic, reveals the wire. Using an action to turn a token clockwise, detaches the token and deactivates the wire.
Any creature who unknowingly comes into contact with the wire takes 1d4 slashing damage and must make a dexterity saving throw, DC 16 or fall prone.
If a creature took the Dash action as part of their movement prior to coming into contact with the wire, the damage is increased to 1d4 points for every 10 feet of its movement speed, and the dexterity save is made at disadvantage.
A creature that is aware of, and remembers, the wire’s location, can safely move over or under the wire as part of their movement.
*Note: An unaware creature can safely move under the wire if the wires placement prevents contact due to height.
