Rod, uncommon

A carved wooden rod with either a bone or leather wrapped handle. It is about the length of a human forearm (may be larger or smaller based on race that created it) with a curved hook at the end that is pressed into the end of the ammunition being used and then whipped forward to dramatically increase the velocity of the thrown projectiles. This weapon uses your strength modifier for attack rolls. As the techniques to use this weapon are more complicated than simply throwing a weapon the user takes a -2 penalty to the attack roll if they are not proficient in its use. The standard ammunition for an Atlatl is a bolt, which deals 1d6 damage on hit with a range of 80/320. However a user may use a Javelin or a Spear as ammunition but this will greatly increase the chance of the ammunition breaking as they are not designed for the increased force. If a Javelin is used as ammunition you add 1d4 to the damage roll and the range for the weapon becomes 60/240. Finally if a Spear is used as the ammunition you add 1d6 to the damage roll and the range becomes 30/90. (These numbers are based on a medium sized character using the weapon. If it is being used by a smaller or larger character it may affect both the range for the different ammunition and what ammunition could be used.)
