Upon first glance, this small statuette of a gecko appears to be a ordinary, though superbly and life-like, piece of art made of steel. Unlike a normal gecko, it has 6 triangular spines made of precious stones- ruby, sapphire, topaz, emerald, amethyst, and diamond.
The spines can be removed. Once removed they can be attached to a normal arrow by sliding the hollow spine over the normal arrowhead. This requires a standard action. An arrow enhanced this way has it’s damage type changed according to the stone used:
- Ruby- fire
- Sapphire- cold
- Topaz- acid
- Emerald- poison
- Amethyst- force
- Diamond- lightning
Close inspection of the statue reveals that the mouth can be opened revealing a circular depression. If a gold piece is placed in the mouth, it will disappear and a replacement spine will grow after a long rest. This can only be done once per day per spine (maximum of 6 gold per day if all spines are used in a single day.
Once attuned the bearer can, by holding the gecko and concentrating, choose what type of spine is created in each of the six slots (e.g., 3 ruby, 2 topaz, and 1 amethyst). One gold piece per spine must still be fed to the gecko for each spine to grow.
Notes: Attunement is achieved by “feeding” the gecko a total 20gp. Once attuned the bearer can, by holding the gecko and concentrating, choose what type of spine is created in each of the six slots (e.g., 3 ruby, 2 topaz, and 1 amethyst). One gold piece per spine must still be fed to the gecko for each spine to grow.

Posted Mar 30, 2021can the bearer change the type of spine when they "feed" the gecko a piece of gold to regrow a spine, or are they set/stuck with they pick when they first attune to it?
