Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a humanoid)
A silver horseshoe on a chain. This item contains 1d4 charges of the Find Steed spell, and regains 1d4 charges at each dawn. Creatures summoned by this amulet are celestial. Upon using the last available charge, roll a d20; on a 1, the amulet breaks in half and loses its power. The final spell still succeeds, and the steed continues to exist until dismissed or reduced to 0 hp as per usual.
Notes: humanoid, Summoning, Movement, Utility, Necklace, Jewelry

Posted Jul 15, 2020I really wanted access to find steed without being a Paladin, and this is my attempt at a solution. There are some similar homebrew items already, but I wanted to put enough limitations on it to make picky DMs happy. It uses an attunement slot, which makes sense for find steed since you have a telepathic connection to the summoned creature. It has limited charges so you can't spam it repeatedly, and if you run out of charges you risk breaking the item and being left with a 'mortal' mount.
I'm not sure if limiting it to celestial only is necessary. I think it would be fair to restrict it to fey instead if that's what your character wants. However I don't think it should enable you to choose freely between fey and celestial as the standard find steed spell does, because I like to imagine that would make the item much more difficult to craft for the person who made it. That's just my opinion though.
It could easily be scaled to cast find greater steed instead; I would simply increase it from rare to very rare and adjust the price or difficulty of acquisition accordingly. If you have an especially strict DM (or if you are the strict DM) change the d20 roll to a d10 to double the chance of destroying the amulet if the last spell charge is used.
If you try it out in a game please let me know!
