Armor (studded leather), artifact (requires attunement by a Samurai Fighter)

While wearing this armor, you gain a +3 bonus to AC.

A tatami gusoku, or "folded armor", is a type of lightweight of folded sturdy cloth armor with various metal and wood plates sewn into the folds. On this magical tatami, the names of distinguished and legendary warriors who walked and died the path of honor are etched onto the cloth panels at the front of the armor. On the back, the names of those warriors who employed more subtle and devious means of fighting, turning from a path of honor to walk and die on a path of dishonor.

An ancient armor handed down through many generations of a samurai line. Due to the countless battles waged with the armor, and the names of those who wore it etched into its panel, the armor itself has grown magical and powerful. The deeds of the past seep into the armor, infusing it with the dichotomy of honor, and dishonor, for which it was utilized over millennia. Now, it grants immense protection and power to those that would utilize it for either of those honorable or dishonorable purposes, but just as the dichotomy within the armor itself is split along a razor's edge, so too does it expect strict adherence to one path of the Code that it exemplifies. If one is honorable, one must be absolutely honorable, and if one is dishonorable, then one must be dishonorable, but to switch between the two is to face the opposite of the protection the armor normally provides, facing attack for such a transgression.

Honor State.

The benefits provided by the armor change depending on whether it deems the actions of the wearer as following the code of Bushido, or disobeying them.

Honorable.

When the armor is in an honorable state, the wearer of the armor can spend a charge to do the following actions.

  • Killing Strike. Target a creature within your remaining movement range. That creature must roll a Wisdom saving throw against a DC of 16. If the creature fails, then you both immediately move towards one another along the shortest possible route. When you meet in the middle, you both make one melee attack roll against the other with your weapons. The one who rolls lower suffers 80 damage of the type of the winner's weapon used for the attack role. Ties mean no effect.

Dishonorable.

When the armor is in an honorable state, the wearer of the armor can spend a charge to do the following actions.

  • False Retreat. Target a creature within 30 feet. You do a attack action against the creature with advantage + a base 30 damage. Your movement either before or after these attacks can only be used to move away from the creature. On the creature's next turn it must make a Wisdom saving throw against a DC of 16. If it fails,  its speed is halved and it must try to use all its actions and movement to try approaching and attacking you.

Spirit of the Armor.

You may spend a charge to enact the spirit of the armor transformation. When this happens, the wearer's body takes on an exaggerated and grotesque oni appearance. The transformation lasts for 3 rounds, with the effects changing based on the state of the armor. Once that minute is up, wearer suffers a level of exhaustion.

If the armor is in an honorable state, the wearer's skin turns red and gives off the impression of maddened strength. While the bearer is in this form, it becomes impossible for him to violate the precepts of Bushido. He also gains the following buffs:

  • +2 to AC as his skin hardens.
  • You regain 5d10 hitpoints.
  • Murderous Intent. All your damage dice are doubled.

If the armor is in an dishonorable state, the wearer's skin turns blue, and gives off the impression of sinister cruelty. While the bearer is in this form, it becomes impossible for him to follow the precepts of Bushido. He also gains the following buffs:

  • +2 to all saving throws as his forms takes on magical resilience.
  • You regain 5d10 hitpoints.
  • Eta Customs. As a bonus action, you can eat the flesh of a dead creature within reach. If you do so, you regain a number of hitpoints equal to half of the creatures max health points when it was alive.
  • Night Demon. As a bonus action, you can cast the invisibility spell.

Switching Between Honorable and Dishonorable

The armor can switch between the honorable or dishonorable state as part of a short rest by the wearer. The armor can also switch due to the actions of the wearer. It switches from dishonorable to honorable if the wearer enacts some of the precepts of bushido listed below (with the exception of Loyalty), and it switches from honorable to dishonorable if the wearer violates those same precepts. If the armor switches instead due to the actions of the wearer, the wearer must make a death saving throw. The player records the failure, if the player needs to make death saving throws as a result of reaching 0 hitpoints, each of these failures count for the purposes of determining whether the player dies or stabilizes. If the number of failures ever reaches 3, the wearer immediately dies. After a long rest, the number of failures gets reset to 0.

Precepts of Bushido

  1. Justice - Refusing to allow the wrong to act without answer. If someone does an injustice in front of you against your family, your teacher your clan or your lord, you must stand up against it.
  2. Courage - Refusing to back away from a battle once it has commenced. You will not use the disengage action, or retreat from a fight entirely.
  3. Mercy - Those with the power of command and the power to kill have a responsibility. You cannot harm the innocent, or kill one who has sincerely surrendered.
  4. Respect - A true warrior is not only strong on the battlefield, but also in their dealings with others. You cannot speak brazenly or crudely to others.
  5. Honesty - When you insist something is true, or say something will be done you will do it. You cannot use the deception skill for outright falsehoods, or go back on your promises.
  6. Honor - No warriors must allow the dignity of his family, or his lord, to be in doubt. You cannot allow things that would bring shame to those beholden to you, such as stealing, exposing oneself to a crowd, other undignified public acts, etc. This also extends to other people that are part of your clan or family, you must try to stop or minimize the shame they may bring about through their actions, or even their circumstance. Having a brother living on the street is shameful.
  7. Character - A warrior always exhibits self-control. You cannot allow yourself to give in to excess, such as drunkenness, gluttony, uncontrolled rage, greed, etc.
  8. Loyalty* (see primary precept below) - All people must serve, and warriors even more so. You cannot betray anyone from your clan, or your lord, and you must help them if you see the need for it.

The Primary Precept

Loyalty is all to a samurai, even to the point of sacrificing one's honor in order to fulfill its requirements. In fact, it is the only value that can ever justify dishonorable actions. While attuned to this item, any time the player violates the precept of Loyalty, he must make a death saving throw. As well, this precept does not cause the armor to switch for being followed or violated, instead it must always be followed.

Charges

The armor has a maximum of 5 charges available to it. It regains 1 expended charge after a long rest. As well, the DM can award a charge if the player exemplifies the precepts of Bushido in a notable way while the armor is in its honorable state, or by violating those precepts in a notable way while the armor is in a dishonorable state.

Destroying the Armor. The armor can only be destroyed when the wearer commits ritual suicide while wearing it with the [Tooltip Not Found], destroying both forever.

Made from tough but flexible leather, studded leather is reinforced with close-set rivets or spikes.

Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, Resistance: Slashing, During the course of the day, the DM can award charges to the player for exemplifying the precepts of Bushido while the armor is in its honorable state, or for violating them while the armor is in a dishonorable state., Samurai Fighter, Combat, Warding
