Aventos, Lord of the Black Pit, charlatan, snake-oil salesman, alchemist, and Warlock dedicated to the otherworldly powers of Chaos.... was granted the secret to imbuing vials with primordial essence from other realms of existence.
These charms can be used as an augment to a spell caster's focus .. hanging them from your staff or wand... or alternately, traded during times of dire need to perform a risky summoning.
The primary power of the charm is to amplify a simple cantrip into a first to third level spell of the same type. A caster may only control one such charm, and each charm is dedicated to a specific damage type. Usually Fire, Water, Air or Earth .. as the elemental chaos is the most readily available source for imbuing these charms.. though other charms are possible.
So Firebolt could become Chromatic Orb(Fire), Scorching Ray, or even Fireball ... once per day (recharge after a long rest).
Alternately, the same fire based charm could be thrown into a bonfire or a roaring fireplace .. and there by free the trapped Fire elemental essense .. summoning an uncontrolled Fire Elemental on the spot, and destroying the charm.
