The original version of this was created by a notoriously stingy dwarf who was stuck in the role of lantern-bearer for his party, notwithstanding his night vision. After some time bemoaning the fact that none of his fellows were properly contributing to the cost of lamp oil, he developed this lamp. It has two compartments, one for standard lamp oil, the other which has a slot to accept coins. It functions as an ordinary lamp in every way (including requiring oil to function), except that the light it sheds can only be seen by those who have placed a silver coin into the lamp’s coin compartment (and only so long as the coin remains in the lamp). These coins are not consumed, and can be removed at any time.
While the original purpose of this lamp was to ensure that Andvari’s allies contributed their “fair” share, the usefulness of a lamp whose light can be seen by friends and not by foes has made it a popular item to duplicate.
