According to legends, inscribing the scales of an albino tortle's shell can invoke useful powers to the wielder.
To do so, you must spend at least 1 hour finely etching a drawing or symbol, that represents a deeply personal and impactful moment in your life, within the bounds of one of the scales.
(The DM determines if an event you want to etch into a scale counts as impactful enough for it to activate it's magical properties.)
While holding or wearing this shield, you can touch one of the scales you've inscribed as a bonus action or reaction, to cause that scale to glow with dim moon- or sunlight, based on whichever is not visible in the sky at the time, radiating that type of dim light in a 20 ft radius around you.
Inscribing the scale with your impactful life event implies that you have grown and learnt to better deal with that sort of situation. Activating a scale will therefor help you overcome it's representative situation and you gain benefits similar to the following examples:
- Witnessing the death of a loved one might give you the ability to stabilize an ally with 0 hit points; or it might let you prevent lethal damage from happening, by taking that damage instead.
- Surviving a situation in which you almost drowned might give you the ability to breath underwater for 10 minutes; or it might let you summon a fey in form of an aquatic beast, that will aid you while underwater.
Which benefits you gain are up to your creativity and your ability to justify it to the DM based on the drawing you made.
A total of 13 scales can be inscribed, and you cannot override any previously inscribed scales. You cannot activate a scale that you haven't inscribed yourself.
Shields require the Utilize action to Don or Doff. You gain the Armor Class benefit of a Shield only if you have training with it.
Notes: You can activate each scale you've inscribed once and recharge all scales after watching at least 1 minute of a sunrise., Wielder must inscribe an image of a deeply personal life event on at least one of the scales., Utility
