Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement)

Legends have it that this artifact originated from a world that came to ruin from a cataclysmic event, where every plane of existence merged into one. If you attempt to visit that world with the key in possession, you would instead be redirected to a different one. It is believed that a godlike being from the astral plane created this artifact, a being that likely served as a guardian for all the portals in its universe. The artifact is notorious for being the cause of planar invasions as any creature with it in its possession could easily leave its plane or prison.

Random Properties. This artifact has the following random properties, which you can determine by rolling on the tables in the "Artifacts" section of the Dungeon Master's Guide:

  • 3 minor beneficial properties
  • 1 minor detrimental properties

Spells. The key has 6 charges. While holding it, you can expend 1 or more of its charges to cast one of the following spells (save DC 20) from it: arcane gate (2 charges; any unoccupied space; doesn't require line of sight), dimension door (1 charge), forbiddance (3 charges), gate (4 charges; subject to "Quantum Jump"), teleportation circle (2 charges). The key regains all its expended charges daily at dawn.

Grounded Point. While the key is in your possession, you can neither be involuntarily teleported nor removed from a plane unless you wish to be, and you ignore all wards against magical travel.

Portal Master. As an action, or as part of casting a spell from this item, you can point the key at a portal within 60 feet of you. You may choose to either close the portal or alter its properties in one or more of the listed following:

  • The portal can only be ended when it reaches its full duration, or after 24 hours, even if a caster ended their concentration.
  • The portal becomes the point of origin and you create a new link to somewhere else within its limit.
  • Only certain creatures of your choice can move into or through the portal.

Astral Travel. As an action, you can point the key outward and name a precise location on any plane of existence before turning it. Upon doing so, you and creatures of your choice within 10 feet of you are instantly transported to the astral plane (unless you are already there), and are pulled at an intense speed toward and through a portal (unless you specified the astral plane). A creature also travels with you if it has you held, whether it be by grappling you, having you restrained in its stomach, etc. At the end of your next turn, you and the creatures with you harmlessly appear at the specified location with no further momentum. This property it is subject to "Quantum Jump".

Quantum Jump. The key has a cumulative 5 percent chance to reset and disappear to a different world setting when used to cast gate or activate its Astral Travel ability.

Destroying the key. To destroy the key one must offer it to Primus himself. He will determine the most efficient way to remove magic from the item and render it an ordinary key.

NOTE: This artifact can cast Arcane Gate but it is licensed content from the Player's Handbook. To publish this homebrew Arcane Gate had to be unattached from this magic item, thus will not appear in the attuned player's spell list.
