Archon’s Retribution, as a symbol of divinity, is an object of worship in the temples dedicated to Angharradh. god of wisdom, growth, and protection. It symbolically shows that wisdom and knowledge should be sharp as in the Archon’s Retribution's tip, broad as in the Archon’s Retribution's breadth and run deep as in Archon’s Retribution's height. Only such wisdom can destroy the darkness of ignorance.
Sentience
The Archon’s Retribution is a sentient chaotic good weapon with an Intelligence of 15, a Wisdom of 21, and a Charisma of 19. It has hearing and truesight out to a range of 120 feet. The weapon communicates telepathically with its wielder and can speak, read, and understand Celestial, Common, Elvish and Sylvan.
Personality
A wise planetar named Orsahm lives within the Archon’s Retribution. Orsahm wants to take a direct role in the eternal struggle between good and evil, so the weapon pushes its wielder toward good actions by espousing the virtues of courage, loyalty, selflessness, and truth, as well as the advancement of just societies.
Dormant
The spear grants the following benefits in its dormant state:
- You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
- While holding the spear, you can use a bonus action to speak its Celestial command word, causing flames to erupt from the spear tip. These flames shed bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet, and at the end of each of your turns, you and each creature within 10 feet of you takes 1d6 radiant damage. The flames last until you use a bonus action to speak the command word again or until you are no longer holding the spear.
- You have resistance to radiant damage while holding this weapon.
- If you are a worshiper of Angharradh, the spear has 1 randomly determined minor beneficial property.
Awakened
When the spear reaches an awakened state, it gains the following properties:
- The weapon’s bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +2, and the extra radiant damage dealt by the weapon when it is ignited increases to 2d6.
- While holding the spear, you can use an action to cast one of the following spells from it (save DC 15): blinding smite, crusader’s mantle, or daylight. Once a spell has been cast using the spear, that spell can’t be cast from the spear again until the next dawn.
- While the spear is ablaze and it deals damage to a creature, the spear radiates a burst of intense light in a 20-foot-radius sphere. Each creature in that area takes 2d6 radiant damage.
- If you are a worshiper of Angharradh, the spear has 1 randomly determined minor beneficial property. If you aren’t a worshiper of Angharradh, the spear has 2 randomly determined minor detrimental properties.
Exalted
When the spear reaches an exalted state, it gains the following properties:
- The weapon’s bonus to attack and damage rolls increases to +3, and the extra radiant damage dealt by the weapon when it is ignited increases to 3d6. Radiant damage dealt by the spear ignores resistance to radiant damage.
- Add sunbeam to the list of spells that can be cast from the spear.
- The saving throw DC for spells cast from the spear increases to 17.
- If you are a worshiper of Angharradh, the spear has 1 randomly determined major beneficial property. If you aren’t a worshiper of Angharradh, the spear has 2 randomly determined major detrimental properties.
See “Artifacts” in chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide for details on randomly determined properties.
