This arcane device can be used to sweep the immediate area for stray magical energies. The user must be within 5 feet of the place a spell was cast at a higher level. The device collects the residual energy as an arcane dust (referred to as "Overcast Powder"). Each device is shaped and functions slightly differently. Each A.C.M. weighs roughly 8lbs and has straps to attach the device to a human-sized creature or item. As each A.C.M. is unique, the actual amount of powder collected will vary in quality and quantity. Regardless of the weight, color, or volume, the amount of Overcharge Powder collected can be used fairly universally.
Each "charge" worth of Overcast Powder can be used to replace 1 GP worth of spell components in its powdered form. If purified and otherwise processed, the value per charge can be increased. Other devices are required to purify and process the material, this is simply the collection apparatus. The internal storage for the device can only hold 5 charges worth of Overcast powder. It will take several minutes to transfer the powder to a water-tight container, as the device has multiple fail-safes that need to be cleared before the powder can be extracted. The rules for collection are shown below.
After a spell is cast at a higher level, the carrier of the A.C.M. can use a bonus action to attempt to collect the overcast powder in the device. The collection attempt must occur before the end of the casters next turn. To collect the Overcast Powder, the user must make an arcana check (DC = 10 + the level the spell was cast at) or collect nothing of use in the device. If successful, the A.C.M collects a number of charges equal to the Spell Level of the spell - the base level of the spell.
For example, a wizard casts a Fireball spell at 5th level. The A.C.M. can collect the residual energies with a DC 15 Arcana check. If successful, the device will be able to collect 2 "charges" worth of Overcast Powder. (5th level cast - 3rd level base spell level (5 - 3 = 2)).
Notes: DMs, consider the magical origin of this (otherwise ignored) powder. The value of the Overcharge Powder is only realized with purification and processing, which could easily be a rare/specialized field in your world. , Utility, Consumable, Outerwear, Artificer
