Weapon (longsword), artifact (requires attunement by a spilling blood in vengeance)

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.

Curse. This sword is cursed and possessed by a vengeful spirit. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the sword, keeping it on your person at all times. While attuned to this weapon, you have disadvantage on attack rolls made with weapons other than this one.

In addition, while the sword is on your person, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw whenever you take damage in combat. On a failed save, you must attack the creature that damaged you until you drop to 0 hit points or it does, or until you can’t reach the creature to make a melee attack against it.

Awakened

When the sword reaches an awakened state, it gains the following properties:

  • The blade becomes a glossy black that seems to absorb light into it.
  • Whenever used to attack the focus of its vengeance you must roll one of your hit die which is consumed. Add that roll to your attack as necrotic damage. Once you have run out of hit dice, you still make the roll, but the damage is now inflicted to you as well as the target.

Sentience. Ardalak is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 10, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 16. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.

The weapon can speak, read, and understand Common, and can communicate with its wielder telepathically. Its voice is deep and echoing. While you are attuned to it, Ardalak also understands every language you know.

Personality. Ardalak was once a red Dragonborn barbarian adventurer. His bloodlust drove him to unspeakable acts and his party was forced to take him down. The wizard bound his soul to his blade to prevent him from being able to rise again. The centuries have done little to quell his rage.

He speaks little, but is unable to contain his own emotions which have a tendency to bleed into the wielder's consciousness.

Proficiency with a Longsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.

Sap. If you hit a creature with this weapon, that creature has Disadvantage on its next attack roll before the start of your next turn.
