The magic involved relies on the principles of affinity and contagion to determine if one artifact shares enough similarity with another example, to assert that they shared key elements such as artisans, materials, ownership, or craftmanship techniques with each other.
The gem in the amulet will glow with varying intensity depending on how similar the samples are to one another. When the amulet is placed in contact with an original artifact or individual, items with a strong psychic affinity (belongings, creations, etc.) will cause the stone to glow. The intensity of the glow increases in direct proportion to the degree of affinity each offering has with the other. For example, if the amulet was placed on the broken base of a statue, and a chip of stone from the statue was placed in proximity to the amulet, it would cause a noticeable glow. If an original signed document is placed underneath the amulet, and a document purported to be signed by the same author of the original is placed next to it, the amulet will glow.
