"They had never seen such things, or known that men such as Moundshroud with a pinch, a clutch, a pressure of fingers might blend an eye with tooth, a tooth with mouth, a mouth with feline bobcat tail. All, all mingled beautifully into a single thing, a wild jigsaw puzzle jungle zoo billowed and trapped, pasted and tied, growing, growing, taking color and sound and pattern in the light of the ascending moon. Now another cannibal eye. Now another hungry maw. A mad chimpanzee. A most insane mandrill-ape. A screaming butcher bird! The boys ran up with the last frights handed over and the kite finished, the ancient flesh laid out, fused by the still blue-smoke-burning horny hands. Mr. Moundshroud lit a cigar with the last bit of fire that sparked out of his thumb and smiled. And the light from his smile showed the Kite for what it was, a kite of destructions, of animals so dire and fierce their outcry drowned the wind and murdered the heart."
― Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree
This enormous kite is shaped like an oversized pteranodon and appears to be made of a patchwork of tattered posters featuring fierce and frightening animals arranged in such a way as to leave only the most ferocious parts of each visible. The Autumn Kite is 10 feet long with has a wingspan of 35 feet, and weighs 15 pounds. It has a bar attached where a real pteranodon's legs would be, which is wide enough to be gripped by 1 humanoid.
The Kite has a soul. When the Kite's physical form is destroyed, it's soul persists on the Ethereal Plane and remain near you. You can command the Kite to disassemble itself. When disassembled, the Kite's physical form to comes apart as though shredded and its pieces are blown away on the wind. Commanding the Kite to reassemble itself summons a gust of wind carrying a swarm of autumn leaves and paper leaflets, which spontaneously merge together to form themselves into the Autumn Kite's physical form. When the Kite is destroyed by any means other that commanding it to disassemble itself, it cannot reassemble itself on the Material Plane again until the next dusk.
The Kite only functions after sunset, and ceases to function at dawn.
The kite magically summons and controls powerful winds to grant it flight; and is controlled by you. It has a flying speed of 80 feet. It can carry up to 8 humanoids at once, regardless of their weight. However, only one person can hold its bar at a time. Passengers you carry with you on the Kite may ride atop the Kite, keeping both hands free, but are subject to Dexterity saving throws not to fall off. Alternatively, passengers may form a human chain, each holding the ankles of the person ahead of them to make the tail of the kite. The magic of the Kite makes this impractical and improbable method possible and no checks are required to maintain one's grip.
The Kite can move freely between the Material and Ethereal Planes while in-flight, and carries its passengers with it when its shifts to the other Plane.
The Kite is capable of acting independently of you, but it always obeys your commands. In combat, it acts on its own turn, but shares your initiative. You can decide when you first roll initiative whether you or the Kite goes first. Once you decide, the turn order is set for the duration of the encounter. The Kite can't attack, but it can take other actions as normal; its statistics are provided below. The Kite cannot relay any sort of information or communicate in any way.

Actions
Etherealness. The Autumn Kite enters the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, or vice versa. If the Kite has any passengers, it must be at least 40 feet above the ground to use this action.
Frightful Presence. Each creature of the Kite's owner's choice within 60 feet of the Kite and aware of it must succeed on a DC 19 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, with disadvantage if the Kite is within line of sight, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the Kite's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
Wings of Autumn Wind. While flying at least 40 feet above the ground, the Kite can use the Dash action as a bonus action.
Reactions
Cliffhanging Glide. When the Kite's owner or a humanoid they designate within 80 feet begins to fall from a height greater than 20 feet, its owner may command it to move up to its speed towards the falling creature. That creature may then use its reaction to attempt to grab hold of the Kite by succeeding on a DC 12 Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity ([Tooltip Not Found]) check.
Tail Wind. When the Kite's owner commands it to take off, up to 7 humanoids chosen by its owner within 30 feet of the kite can use their reaction to move up to their speed towards the Kite to grab on to the owner or another passenger.
