Wondrous Item, rare (requires attunement by a Chaotic-aligned character)

Malyk, God of Chaos and Wild Magic

Malyk is a Chaotic Evil demigod of the Underdark. Domains of Trickery and Arcane. Known as the 'Harbinger of Chaos' and 'Corruptor of Peace', he thrives in the dark, angry thoughts of the world. His symbol is a ram's head with mismatched eyes. He has been physically depicted as an elven humanoid with elongated limbs, four eyes, and ram's horns.

He particularly focuses on spellcasters, and the Wild Magic of Sorcerers, but gained followers of all kinds in his prime. His domain spread throughout the downtrodden Drow communities, as he promised rebellion, uprising, and destruction of the system. He offers dangerous and powerful magicks, often pertaining to uncontrollable spiralling, and the maiming of the user and any surrounding persons. Many stories also portray him as 'gifting' visions of the future to random adventurers, and watching them go mad with visions of their own deaths.

Malyk was subdued two centuries ago, his reign of terror halted by Llolth (Queen of Spiders, primary deity of the Underdark). He was then imprisoned in his own temple by a legendary sorcerer,  and has been sealed inside since.

The Amulet of Malyk has a long silver chain, and a silver pendant in the shape of a ram's head. There are two shining jewels as eyes; a star-shaped ruby, and a teardrop blue sapphire. It is imbued with the wild magic of the demigod, gifted to his most loyal followers.

When attuned and worn, the wearer gains:

  • Proficiency in Insight skill (if the wearer already has this skill, it has no effect)
  • Vulnerability to Psychic damage

The Amulet can be used as an action to cast a charge of Crown of Madness at 2nd level. After the spell is cast, the caster MUST roll on the Wild Magic table and suffer the consequences.

The Amulet can hold one charge - at dawn, wearer rolls at D6. If 2-6 is rolled, the Amulet regains the expended charges. If 1 is rolled, charges are not regained, and the wearer may not reroll until next dawn.
After one week of attunement by a single character, the Amulet gains +1 charge. This must be regained with the same conditions.
After one month, the Amulet gains +2 charges, regained with the same conditions.
After one year of consecutive attunement, the Amulet gains a fifth and final charge, and all charges can be regained at Dawn without rolling a D6.

Note for DM:  The Amulet of Malyk has an affinity for Chaos. The Amulet will not stay properly clasped on a non-Chaotic aligned character, and will fall off randomly. If worn and attuned by a Chaotic aligned character, the character must behave appropriately chaotic, or else the Amulet will not stay properly clasped. At least once per day, the character must perform one of the following behaviours, whether they are successful or otherwise:

  • Lying to other characters
  • Stealing or pickpocketing
  • Attacking an innocent/allied character
  • Cause a scene or create a distraction
  • Destroy something with unnecessary vigour

As of the DM's discretion ultimately. Optionally, the longer the Amulet of Malyk is worn consecutively, the wearer will behave differently:

  • 1 week consecutively - wearer has a disdain for any kind of authority
  • 1 month consecutively - wearer will not follow instructions/assistance from other characters
  • 1 year consecutively - wearer shifts to Chaotic Evil alignment regardless of previous alignment

Notes: Vulnerability: Psychic, Proficiency: Insight, Chaotic-aligned character
