Arcanum of the Great Owl

A strange, otherworldly tome that was once one of the personal spellbooks of the Great Owl, before his Ascension. It is wrought from iron, bound in unknown leather, and faintly radiates a dark, corrupted aura. It has a bookmark that doubles as a quill attached to its spine in the form of a large, black feather.

This spellbook possesses a number of wonderous features:

Knowledge of the Grave

This spellbook possesses 1000 gold worth of magical ink for the transcribing of spells, which is refreshed upon dipping its quill into the blood of any deceased mortal with the inherent potential for magic.

Avarice of the Great Owl

When attuned to this book, a wizard may, as a bonus action upon witnessing the death of a magic user within 30 feet, place a dreadful curse upon the targets's soul, who must make a wisdom or intelligence save against the caster's spell DC.

If the target fails the save, this spellbook rends magical knowledge from their being as they die, taking one prepared or known spell from the victim's spell list and automatically adding it to the pages of this book. The soul of the victim is permanently destroyed, and cannot be resurrected by any means.

If the target succeeds the save, the wizard may regain one spell slot of their choice from any unused spell slots that the target had upon death.

This feature may be used a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and recharges on a long rest.

Font of Magical Independence

While attuned, the book's owner may use it as a spellcasting focus.

Mastery of the Border

The holder of this spellbook may use an action to make a contested spellcasting check against the wisdom save of any creature who has died within the past minute and who has a size of medium or large. If the creature fails the save, the spellbook casts "Animate Dead" on the body, without consuming a spell slot. If the creature makes the save, the action fails, and it consumes a charge from the spellbook.

This spellbook may have additional features that may only be accessed with the blessing of the Great Owl.
