Wondrous Item, artifact (requires attunement by a bard)

Deep in Avernus, the tones of an exquisite fiddle player filtered down to Asmodeus. And he grew covetous. He wanted that music to be played for him, and him alone. And so he crafted the most exquisite fiddle ever made from gold, and visited the Prime Material Plane. Looking for the player he had heard. And there, in an Inn in Daggerford, (or so the story goes) he found the boy and challenged him to a musical duel, if he won, the boy could keep the fiddle, but if he lost then the boys soul would be forfeit and the boy would return to Avernus with him and play for Asmodeus and Asmodeus alone for all eternity...

The duel commenced. They played all night. But as the sun rose, Asmodeus knew he was bested, and handed over the prize to the boy. But being the duplicitous devil he was, unbeknown to the boy he cursed the fiddle, and returned to Avernus.

The fiddle was passed down from father to son, until it's origins became nothing but a tall tale told when its' owner performed. But each owner, as he first attuned to the instrument knew it to be true...

The instrument can only be played by a Bard, and is normally gifted from one owner to the next. However, it may be claimed by a new owner by a contested Charisma  (Performance) check. The looser takes 3d4 psychic damage, the winner can claim the fiddle, and attune to it, without harm. Anyone attempting to attune to it without either having it gifted to them, or winning a duel also takes 3d4 psychic damage. If there is no owner, (i.e. the present owner is dead and it was not bequeathed to a new owner), then a new owner can claim it, but will take 3d4 psychic damage immediately.  The owner may use it as their spell casting focus.
