This crank-fed crossbow has a bandolier of bolts attached that feed into it. The bandolier of the crossbow typically holds 100 bolts, but other sizes can be attached.
Rapid Fire. When the user takes the attack Action with this weapon, they can choose to enter Rapid Fire mode. While in this mode, the wielder moves at half speed, but each subsequent turn fires twice as many bolts as the turn before starting with 1 on the turn they enter Rapid Fire mode. The user can exit Rapid Fire mode at any time on their turn, no action required, but doing so returns the bolts fired count to 1.
While in Rapid Fire mode, a 1 rolled on an Attack roll jams the crossbow and it cannot be used again until an Action is used to clear the jam.
When in Rapid Fire mode, use the following guide for attack rolls:
1 - 4 bolts being fired - Roll an attack roll for each bolt
8 or more bolts being fired - Divide the total number of bolts being fired by 4, rounded down. Then make an attack roll for each of those groups.
While in Rapid Fire mode, the wielder gains no benefit from the multiattack ability and cannot make a Rapid Fire attack with this weapon and leave Rapid Fire mode to make another attack.
Reload. Reloading the bandolier of the crank-fed crossbow requires an hour of downtime. If done during a Short or Long Rest, the activity is non-strenuous and does not have any adverse affects on the benefits of the rest. Feats such as Crossbow Expert do not negate the reload time of the bandolier, but does work normally if reloading the crossbow itself.
It requires an Action to remove and then reattach a bandolier from the crank-fed crossbow.
Proficiency with a Heavy Crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
