This burnt and bloodstained paperback book displays no title on the spine or cover save for a signature on the inside of the cover that reads "B.K."
The book's pages are of old parchment and its not uncommon for pages to have burnt edges or blood stains, regardless of this, the text on the pages constantly shifts in what appears to be backwards, chicken-scratched common. This item's effect occurs when the book is opened and a creature uses an action to read a sentence from the book.
Upon activation, roll 1d10, gaining a corresponding effect from the table below:
1 - No effect, the reader coughs a small puff of smoke.
2 - A burnt rose falls to the ground within 5 feet of the reader.
3 - A layer of coal dust explodes outwards from the reader. The reader and every creature, surface, and object within 20 feet becomes covered in the dust and takes 5 additional fire damage the next time it takes fire damage. Objects that are not being worn or carried are lit ablaze. The dust can be rubbed off with 1 minute of effort or being immersed in water.
4 - A lit Molotov cocktail appears in the reader's hand. The object is an improvised weapon with a range of 20/60 and 1d4 damage die. On contact with a creature or object, the Molotov explodes, each creature within 5 feet of the detonation must make a DC 12 Dexterity save, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failed save or half as much on a success.
5 - The reader gains the ability to light objects and creatures ablaze upon touch. As an action for the next 10 minutes, the reader can attempt to touch an object or creature within reach (unarmed strike) dealing no damage and lighting the target ablaze, taking 1d10 fire damage at the end of their turns until the target takes an action to smother the flames or becomes immersed in liquid.
6 - A nonmagical bottle of "Guillotine Guile" whiskey appears within 5 feet of the reader. It taste's awful.
7 - Fireball is cast centered on the reader (DC 13 3rd level)
8 - 2d4 skeletons claw themselves from the ground within 10 feet of the reader and become hostile to the closest creature (including the reader) until they are destroyed. Their bones crumble to ash after being defeated.
9 - A swarm of mosquitoes centered on the caster extends 5 feet in every direction. Every creature (not including the reader) that starts their turn within the radius takes 3 poison damage. This effect lasts for 10 minutes.
10 - The reader becomes blinded, deafened, and cannot smell or speak. For the next minute the reader believes they are missing their head and cannot be convinced otherwise for the duration, but can otherwise move as normal and can feel things that come into contact with them.
