Weapon (longsword), legendary (requires attunement by a creature of evil alignment)

The Nightsword is a unique blade possessed by Strahd von Zarovich. In its original form, it had a platinum hilt and guard, and a thin crystal blade as strong as steel, and was twin to a blade crafted for his younger brother, Sergei.

Strahd employed a powerful wizard named Khazan to destroy his brother's weapon after Sergei’s death. The first part of the process required the hilt and the blade to be separated, which Khazan accomplished. While Khazan was busying himself destroying the blade, his apprentice stole the hilt and fled. Khazan later located his apprentice’s mutilated corpse in the Svalich Woods, but the hilt was nowhere to be found. To avoid the vampire’s wrath, Khazan told Strahd that the entire weapon had been destroyed.

When Strahd found out that Khazan had lied, he commanded the wizard to use the same process on his own blade, but Strahd let his dark nature corrupt the blade, instead creating a dark counterpart to wield should he ever need to face his dead brother's sword in combat. The blade is a specially-shaped sphere of annihilation, but dealing necrotic rather than force damage. It will dampen bright light to dim light out to a range of 30 feet, except when the light is cast by a sunsword, in which case the sphere of influence of the Nightsword is reduced to 10 feet.

Sentience. The Nightsword is a sentient chaotic evil weapon with an Intelligence of 11, a Wisdom of 17, and a Charisma of 16. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. The weapon communicates by transmitting emotions to the creature carrying or wielding it.

Personality. The Nightsword’s special purpose is to destroy its twin, the Sunsword, a hatred fomented by its creator Strahd, who killed his brother with his own hands as well.
