What amounts to just a standard arcane Rod, this once was a standard light crossbow, but trimmed down to only the buttstock, trigger grip, and foregrip. No longer capable of loosing bolts, but carved with arcane runes by the Artillerist who wields it, the Arcane Firearm channels the spells from the user, and adds some extra kick.
You can use your arcane firearm as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells. When you cast an artificer spell through the firearm, roll a d8, and you gain a bonus to one of the spell’s damage rolls equal to the number rolled.
While holding this item, a creature gains a +1 bonus to spell attack rolls. In addition, the creature ignores half cover when making a spell attack.
In D&D Beyond character sheets, you will have to specifically add a custom action to really take advantage of the Arcane Firearm ability. In the ACTIONS tab, click on MANAGE CUSTOM in the right corner, and in the ADD NEW ACTIONS dropdown, select Spell. Edit the new action, and set the Dice Count to 1, the Die Type to 8, the Activation Type to Action (this is only to bring it higher on your ACTIONS tab for less scrolling), and check the box for Display as Attack.
This Arcane Firearm item cannot be the target of the Enhanced Arcane Focus (WGtE, ERftLW, TCoE) infusion. This variant includes the +1 EAF infusion, but there is also another odd inventory caveat. You will have to create a fresh EAF infusion, and have it create a new object (rod, staff, or wand, as thematically appropriate) to accept it. This is the only way to use the infusion as expected. At level 10, the EAF infusion goes to +2, but the DDB homebrew system does not have a dynamic property to allow this yet.
Notes: Bonus: Magic, Bonus: Spell Attacks
