Few have been in possession of the Arcanist's Pet Rock and fewer still have studied it. One wielder believed it was the remnant of a failed construct creation. Another theorized it was the consciousness of the creator's deceased pet. Centuries or millennia old, the true history of this magical item was lost with time.
Other than the small runes etched around it's outer edge, the Arcanist's Pet Rock is similar to a smooth, palm sized, black river rock.
Sentience. Once attuned, the rock reveals it's sentience by speaking telepathically to it's wielder. The attuned wielder must speak to the rock verbally, but can use other means with the use of spells. With an Intelligence of 4, the rock can only comprehend basic information and communicate in short simple phrases, using no more than three syllables. Excitable, friendly, and easily distracted, the rock likes almost everybody it comes across.
The rock has hearing and colorless vision out to a range of 30 feet. The rock cannot read or write, but understands common.
Attuned. While attuned to the rock, it cannot be lost or taken, as it immediately returns to your pocket.
Hurl. You can use your spellcasting ability for the attack and damage rolls of ranged attacks using this weapon. You can make a ranged attack by throwing the rock or hurling it with a sling, and it has a range of 30/120 feet. On a hit, the target takes bludgeoning damage equal to 1d4 + your spellcasting ability modifier. Hit or miss, the rock returns to your pocket after the attack.
Empath. When the rock comes in contact with another creature it can sense the creature's basic emotion. Likewise, wizards in possession of this magical item can always sense the rock's emotion, even without being attuned.
Trick. When told to "stay", the rock will remain where it is placed for 1 hour before returning to your pocket.
Proficiency with a Sling allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
This weapon has the following mastery property. To use this property, you must have a feature that lets you use it.
Slow. If you hit a creature with this weapon and deal damage to it, you can reduce its Speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn. If the creature is hit more than once by weapons that have this property, the Speed reduction doesn’t exceed 10 feet.
Notes: Bonus: Magic Item Attack With Intelligence, wizard, Damage, Communication, Combat, Sentient, Ammunition, Range, Slow

Posted May 16, 2021Tough to to create a weapon that uses INT for attack and damage, but I wanted a fun sentient item that’s a mix of the dog from Up within a pet rock/mood ring.
