Zifrondel is old. So old.....so timeless. Once he was part of Mephistopheles's inner circle. The master of names. A devil on par with the arch-Dukes. He kept all the names of all the devils of importance that dwelled in the nine hells, especially the 8th hell, called Cania, where his master ruled. Zifrondel was summoned to the material plane by a powerful wizard of Ched Nassad. The wizard, a specialist in divination magic, bound Zifrondel to a book, seeking to learn the names of all the devils in his head. The wizard though, had divined all the information about Zifrondel, from a crystal ball that was controlled by worshipers of Asmodeus. They had given the wizard all the tools needed to trap Zifrondel in the book, but they neglected to tell him the cost...his life. The wizard's soul was the final piece of the trap.
The daughter of the mage, Halisstra DeVir, knew the book had too much power to control. She also knew that the cultists would find the book if it was in the city. So she took the book to Menzoberranzan and bound the book to a young drow of noble blood. She kept track of the book as the child aged. She always made sure to lead him to every city except Ched Nassad. In the mean time she created a magical copy of Zifrodel and changed it's location often, always keeping the cultists searching for the copy. As the young drow aged to manhood, she advised he make his way to the surface and make a name for himself. Even she couldn't grasp the thing she had bound to the boy. The devil once known as Zifrondel was a shadow of it's former self, but it was somehow bound to both the successes and the failures of it's host.
The book is covered with what looks like small red scales. The pages are gilt-edged and thicker than normal parchment. A mummified forked tongue is sewn to the cover of the book.
The grisly cover decoration on the tome, once belonged to the devil Zifrondel.
The first few pages of the tome are filled with indecipherable scrawls. The remaining pages are blank and pristine.
Sentience: Zifrondel is a sentient lawful evil book with an Intelligence of 14, a Wisdom of 19, and a Charisma of 15. It can speak, read, and understand infernal. In addition, the item can communicate telepathically with any character that carries or wields it. It's voice is unnatural and almost always whispers. It has hearing and darkvision out to 120 feet. It's lawful evil, but unlike most sentient magic items, it doesn't concern itself with diametrically opposed alignments, or goodly beings whatsoever. It specifically hates worshippers of Asmodeus and will do anything in it's power to thwart their plans or destroy them utterly. It also has a strong dislike of demons, which can only be attributed to a millennia of waging the blood war . The item is convinced that it's wielder has a key role to play in future events.
Property: If you are a mage (wizard), you can use this tome as a spellbook. Sorcerer's can copy spells from scrolls and acquired spell books by placing the desired spell page on the cover of Zifrodel, at which point the book consumes the page. The book can hold up to 3 times the caster's level in spells for a sorcerer.
Once per long rest while you are holding the tome, as an Bonus action, you can cast a spell you have written in this tome without expending a spell slot, having to speak, or having to make gestures. You can take another action as part of the same action, but not if it involves casting a spell. (see Bonus Action Spells in the PHB). The caster must be of sufficient level to cast the spells in the book.

The item has a powerful modified curse/Geas spell on it. The wielder is bound to help the book's true goal of revenge and eventful freedom. The book is bound by a similar compulsion. So long as both entities are similarly aligned, the book will almost always keep it's word, keep in mind that it is a devil and will at times play to it's goals.
